Phenology in freshwaters: a review and recommendations for future research

Taylor Woods et al.

Summary: Phenology changes in freshwater systems are not as well studied as in terrestrial and marine environments, with limited long-term data availability and differing research focuses between lotic and lentic habitats. Temperature remains the most investigated environmental cue in freshwater phenology research, with opportunities for future studies to explore biological, spatial, and temporal scales with novel data sources and methods.

Temperature, emergence phenology and consumption drive seasonal shifts in fish growth and production across riverscapes

Matthew J. Kaylor et al.

Summary: This study assessed spatial patterns and processes determining seasonal changes in juvenile Chinook Salmon size, growth, and production in two NE Oregon subbasins. Results showed that in spring, growth rates of Chinook Salmon decreased with distance upstream, while in summer, growth patterns reversed with greater diet ration sizes and growth efficiencies upstream than downstream, contributing to longitudinal gradients in the proportion of fish growth achieved in different seasons. This study revealed that longitudinal gradients of fish growth and production can reverse across seasons, with important contributions of warmer, downstream habitats to overall production occurring during cooler times of the year.

The importance of warm habitat to the growth regime of cold-water fishes

Jonathan B. Armstrong et al.

Summary: By modeling the growth of riverine fish across warm and cool sections of a river network, the authors reveal that habitat that are suboptimally warm in summer may actually provide the majority of growth potential. They propose an alternative conceptual framework, the growth regime, to account for seasonal and landscape variation in physiological performance, focusing on riverine fish. They demonstrate that there is a synergy between cold and warm habitats, which could be fundamental to support cold-water fisheries.

Climate and land-use changes interact to drive long-term reorganization of riverine fish communities globally

Lise Comte et al.

Summary: As climate change unfolds, riverine fish communities are increasingly dominated by thermophilic and limnophilic species. There is a synergy among climate and land use-related drivers, leading to heightened community thermophilization in more human-modified systems. Quantifying vulnerability of riverine systems to climate change requires a broader, more integrative approach.
