Spatial distribution of stable isotopes in surface water on the upper Indus River basin (UIRB): Implications for moisture source and paleoelevation reconstruction

Mohd Aadil Bhat et al.

Summary: Characterisation of isotopes in the Himalayan catchment area reveals that the key source of moisture in the studied river basin is mainly from westerlies and southwest monsoons, with little contribution from regional moisture recycling and subcloud evaporation. Additionally, a relationship between delta O-18 and elevation was observed in tributaries at elevations above 3500 meters, with a delta O-18 elevation slope of -2 parts per thousand/km established in the study area.

Groundwater salinity and isotope characterization: a case study from South-West Punjab, India

Gopal Krishan et al.

Summary: This study identified four different zones of groundwater in Sri Muktsar Sahib district through isotope analysis, which can be useful in managing water resources and identifying fresh water and saline groundwater zones in the area.

Isotopes (618O,6D and 3H) variations in groundwater with emphasis on salinization in the state of Punjab, India

Gopal Krishan et al.

Summary: Punjab's agrarian economy is facing challenges due to falling groundwater levels and deteriorating groundwater quality, with increasing salinity being a major concern. Irrigation needs are met by groundwater and canal water, but canal irrigation has led to waterlogging and subsequent salinization, rendering fertile land unproductive in the south-western part of Punjab. Further research is being done to understand the dynamics of groundwater recharge and the effects of evaporation on salinity levels.

Baseline maps of potentially toxic elements in the soils of Garhwal Himalayas, India: Assessment of their eco-environmental and human health risks

Amit Kumar et al.

Summary: Geochemical mapping in the Himalaya region revealed that natural processes determine the distribution of variables, with land use influencing grain sizes and posing potential health risks. Remediation of contaminated soils is necessary to reduce risks and improve land resource utilization efficiency.

Long term trend analysis and suitability of water quality of River Ganga at Himalayan hills of Uttarakhand, India

Amit Kumar et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the water quality of River Ganga was generally good, suitable for drinking and agricultural activities, but showed slight pollution during 2015-2018 with decreasing trends in pH and dissolved oxygen concentration. Changes in water quality parameters over time indicate a potential decline in river water quality if the current scenario persists.

Occurrences of potentially toxic trace metals in groundwater of the state of Punjab in northern India

Gopal Krishan et al.

Summary: The study analyzed 275 representative water samples and found that some groundwater and canal water samples exceeded acceptable limits for heavy metal concentrations, with arsenic and iron being particularly prominent. In certain cities and villages in Punjab, heavy metal contamination was observed to be more severe, especially in terms of arsenic and iron concentrations exceeding permissible limits.

Nickel in terrestrial biota: Comprehensive review on contamination, toxicity, tolerance and its remediation approaches

Amit Kumar et al.

Summary: Nickel as a dual-acting element in terrestrial biota has raised concerns among environmental and health researchers. Investigation on nickel concentrations in plants, soil, and water resources indicates potential risks to ecosystems and human health. Understanding the distribution and effects of nickel can contribute to the development of effective remediation strategies.

Impact of lockdown due to COVID-19 pandemic on groundwater salinity in Punjab, India: some hydrogeoethics issues

G. Krishan et al.

Summary: The study collected 48 groundwater samples from Punjab's industrial districts before and after the lockdown period, analyzing the impact of COVID-19 lockdown on groundwater salinity. The results showed a reduction in TDS values in shallow aquifers after the lockdown, indicating the need for proper management of salinity elements to prevent groundwater contamination.
