Four decades of progress in cylindrospermopsin research: The ins and outs of a potent cyanotoxin

Yiming Yang et al.

Summary: Cyanotoxin cylindrospermopsin (CYN) is a toxic metabolite from cyanobacteria with cosmopolitan occurrence, aquatic bioaccumulation, and multi-organ toxicity. It poses a great challenge for public health due to its cytotoxic, genotoxic, immunotoxic, and neurotoxic effects, with major toxicity manifested in the liver. Further research is needed to address current data gaps and identify future directions for CYN research.

Immunotoxic Effects Induced by Microcystins and Cylindrospermopsin: A Review

Leticia Diez-Quijada et al.

Summary: The impact of cyanotoxins on the immune system is not yet fully elucidated, but studies have shown that they may lead to altered functions of immune cells and abnormal levels of cytokines. Reports on the immunotoxicity of MCs and CYN are scarce, indicating a need for further research in this area.

Evaluation of toxic effects induced by repeated exposure to Cylindrospermopsin in rats using a 28-day feeding study

Leticia Diez-Quijada et al.

Summary: The 28-day repeated dose oral study on rats with Cylindrospermopsin (CYN) showed mild toxic effects with no toxicity relevance in male rats, while slight changes in biochemical parameters and organ weights were observed in female rats without toxicological significance. This suggests the need for longer oral toxicity studies to define the potential consequences of long-term CYN exposure.
