A study of climate model responses of the western Pacific subtropical high to El Nino diversity

Mengyan Chen et al.

Summary: This study examines the impacts of different types of El Nino events on the western Pacific subtropical high using a climate model hindcast. The hindcasts show realistic simulations for the impacts during CP-I El Nino, but overestimate the impacts during EP El Nino and CP-II El Nino. The overestimates are mainly due to biases in the simulations of El Nino SST anomalies and the Walker circulation.

Calibration of X-Band Radar for Extreme Events in a Spatially Complex Precipitation Region in North Peru: Machine Learning vs. Empirical Approach

Ruetger Rollenbeck et al.

Summary: Cost-efficient single-polarized X-band radars are a feasible alternative for capturing complex precipitation patterns due to their high sensitivity and resolution. In Peru, the first horizontal scanning weather radar was installed in Piura in 2019, following the devastating 2017 coastal El Nino. A modified empirical approach, along with a well-established machine learning technique, is employed to calibrate rain rates from radar reflectivity. Both methods require preprocessing steps and show good spatial variability of rainfall.
