Comprehensive vertical accuracy analysis of freely available DEMs for different landscape types of the Rur catchment, Germany

Tanja Kramm et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the vertical accuracy of nine freely available digital elevation models (DEMs) in the Rur catchment in Germany, finding differing accuracy levels based on slopes, landforms, and land use. The SRTM DEM showed the highest accuracy, while TanDEM-X and Copernicus DEM had ambivalent results affected by vegetation and water areas.

Quality Assessment of TanDEM-X DEMs, SRTM and ASTER GDEM on Selected Chinese Sites

Haijiao Han et al.

Summary: Digital elevation models (DEMs) are fundamental data for scientific and engineering research, and the quality of DEMs can impact local applications. Studies show that TanDEM-X DEM has the best overall quality followed by SRTM, while ASTER GDEM has the lowest quality. The relationship between DEM quality and terrain factors, as well as the creation process of DEMs, is significant for further applications.

Use of TanDEM-X and SRTM-C Data for Detection of Deforestation Caused by Bark Beetle in Central European Mountains

Katerina Gdulova et al.

Summary: The study found that SRTM and TanDEM-X have similar vertical bias in non-forest areas, with negative values up to -2.5 m and LE90s below 7.8 m. In forests, the vertical bias of SRTM and TanDEM-X ranged from -0.5 to 4.1 m and LE90s from 7.2 to 11.0 m, respectively. The height differences between SRTM and TanDEM-X show moderate dependence on the slope and its orientation.

Digital Elevation Models: Terminology and Definitions

Peter L. Guth et al.

Summary: Digital elevation models (DEMs) provide fundamental depictions of the Earth’s shape and are influenced by various spheres including the hydrosphere, cryosphere, biosphere, and anthroposphere. The treatment of DEM surfaces depends on their intended use and sensor characteristics. Different types of DEMs have varying vertical datums and data spacings, highlighting the importance of understanding and reflecting on their characteristics for users.

Shaping the Global High-Resolution TanDEM-X Digital Elevation Model

Martin Huber et al.

Summary: The global digital elevation model (DEM) produced by the TanDEM-X mission is of unprecedented quality and coverage, but may contain artifacts such as rough water surfaces, outliers, and voids, requiring DEM editing. This article presents a specially developed semi-automatic framework for generating an edited version of the TanDEM-X dataset, focusing on water areas, outlier handling, and void filling.

The TanDEM-X Mission Phases-Ten Years of Bistatic Acquisition and Formation Planning

Markus Bachmann et al.

Summary: TanDEM-X is a formation flying interferometer made up of two SAR satellites that acquire bistatic SAR data of the earth in order to create a global digital elevation model and scientific interferometric datasets. The article provides an overview of the mission's ten years of acquisition and formation planning, including considerations for the 3D distance between satellites, regions of interest, and mission constraints to effectively plan bistatic acquisitions.

TanDEM-X: 10 Years of Formation Flying Bistatic SAR Interferometry

Manfred Zink et al.

Summary: The TanDEM-X mission, launched in 2010, aimed to provide a global Digital Elevation Model with unprecedented accuracy using a formation flying radar system. In addition to DEM data, TanDEM-X also has unique capabilities that support various scientific experiments. Despite the completion of most mission objectives, the mission continues to focus on monitoring ongoing changes in Earth's topography.
