Are small towns really inefficient? A data envelopment analysis of sampled towns in Jiangsu province, China

Xu Yin et al.

Summary: The study found significant differences in the efficiency characteristics of different types of towns, with around 80% of sampled towns having the potential to improve efficiency through intensive resource use and production scale expansion; although county-towns received more resources, their efficiency was not significantly superior to other types of towns; small towns performed well in terms of economic density, comparable to small and medium-sized cities but lower than large cities with populations over 1 million in the municipal district.

Understanding patterns and multilevel influencing factors of small town shrinkage in Northeast China

Yao Tong et al.

Summary: The study found that in Northeast China, towns with small populations and lower administrative levels are more likely to experience urban shrinkage. The shrinking towns are mainly agricultural product distribution centers, industrial, and resource-based. Additionally, county-level factors have significant cross-level effects on shrinking towns.

An extended time series (2000-2018) of global NPP-VIIRS-like nighttime light data from a cross-sensor calibration

Zuoqi Chen et al.

Summary: This study established an extended time series of NPP-VIIRS-like nighttime light data for the period 2000-2018 through a unique sensor calibration method, providing a valuable tool for analyzing long-term urbanization processes with good spatial patterns and temporal consistency. The resulting product showed high accuracy and consistency compared to existing datasets, demonstrating its potential for monitoring demographic and socioeconomic activities over an extended period of time.
