Advances in Unmanned Aerial System Remote Sensing for Precision Viticulture

Alberto Sassu et al.

Summary: New technologies such as remote sensing and unmanned aerial systems (UASs) are being widely used for precision management, monitoring, and control of crop variability in viticulture scenarios. UASs are characterized by high precision, flexibility, and low operating costs, making them essential tools for winegrowers. Their ability to respond to the increasing demand for digital technologies in agriculture positions them to play a significant role in future applications of viticulture.

Beyond the traditional NDVI index as a key factor to mainstream the use of UAV in precision viticulture

Alessandro Matese et al.

Summary: The exponential growth of research on the identification of correlations between vegetational indices from UAV imagery and vine parameters has been noted in the last decade. The study evaluates the potential of new canopy geometry-based indices for characterizing agronomic parameters compared to traditional NDVI, and focuses on developing a rapid yield forecast methodology based on UAV data. With the canopy thickness showing high performance in regression models and machine learning models reaching an average accuracy of 85.95% in yield prediction, the feasibility of this research as a global yield model has been confirmed through accurate validation in different vineyards over multiple years.

Radiometric Correction of Multispectral UAS Images: Evaluating the Accuracy of the Parrot Sequoia Camera and Sunshine Sensor

Per-Ola Olsson et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the accuracy of the Parrot Sequoia camera and sunshine sensor, revealing the impact of camera temperature sensitivity and atmospheric influence on images. Recommendations include preheating the camera and capturing images of reflectance calibration panels to compensate for atmospheric effects. The research also highlighted the significant influence of the sunshine sensor orientation, suggesting the use of smoothing functions for data processing. The developed workflow showed high correlation with data from a handheld spectroradiometer for vegetation index calculation.

The Application of UAV-Based Hyperspectral Imaging to Estimate Crop Traits in Maize Inbred Lines

Meiyan Shu et al.

Summary: This study explored the feasibility of estimating important crop traits in maize using UAV hyperspectral images and identified optimal modeling methods. The results showed that sensitive bands were mainly in the near-red and red-edge regions, with more bands identified by CARS than by SPA. The optimal combinations for AGB, TLA, and SPAD value were CARS-PLS, while for TWK it was CARS-RF. Additionally, the PLS model was found to be more stable than the RF model.
