Coastline Detection Based on Sentinel-1 Time Series for Ship- and Flood-Monitoring Applications

Ramona Pelich et al.

Summary: This study proposes an automatic method for coastline detection using the Sentinel-1 time series, which averages the dynamical variations of coastal areas and accurately classifies sea and land pixels through an iterative hierarchical tiling method. The results show significant benefits in Earth observation-monitoring applications, such as ship detection and floodwater mapping, with an overall agreement ranging from 80% to 90%.

Advances in estimating Sea Level Rise: A review of tide gauge, satellite altimetry and spatial data science approaches

Naheem Adebisi et al.

Summary: This study systematically reviewed the current advances in estimating sea level change, including trends in observation systems, radar technology, satellite altimetry, and the role of emerging spatial data science concepts and processing workflows. The findings suggest that tide gauges remain the best approach for long-term coastal sea level study, while satellite altimetry is suitable for global and regional scales.

Twenty-first-century projections of shoreline change along inlet-interrupted coastlines

Janaka Bamunawala et al.

Summary: This study presents projections of shoreline change adjacent to 41 tidal inlets worldwide using a novel probabilistic, system-based model. It shows that under the RCP 8.5 scenario, retreat dominates in 90% of cases over the twenty-first century, with projections exceeding 100 m of retreat in two-thirds of cases. However, some systems are projected to accrete, highlighting the diverse responses of inlet-interrupted coasts to different influencing factors.

A Tidal Flat Wetlands Delineation and Classification Method for High-Resolution Imagery

Hong Pan et al.

Summary: Tidal flat wetlands, as an important part of coastal ecosystems, face increasing threats from pollution and unreasonable utilization. This study proposes a method using high-resolution remote sensing images to delineate and classify tidal flat wetlands with high accuracy. The results show that the proposed method is superior to existing methods, making it applicable in practical scenarios such as construction projects.

A review and meta-analysis of remote sensing data, GIS methods, materials and indices used for monitoring the coastline evolution over the last twenty years

Dionysios Apostolopoulos et al.

Summary: The study conducted a meta-analysis of the most common methods, materials, software, and indices used by researchers over the last twenty years to evaluate and quantify shoreline evolution. Key points identified include low usage of high-resolution satellite images and limited funding for coastal erosion studies.
