Synthesis and Characterizations of Barium Zirconate-Alkali Carbonate Composite Electrolytes for Intermediate Temperature Fuel Cells

Gilles Taillades et al.

Summary: The combination of BZY with alkali metal carbonate promoted densification and enhanced ionic conductivity of the composite ionic conductors for intermediate temperature fuel cells. The increase in conductivity with hydrogen partial pressure suggests that protons are the main charge carriers, transferring from the ceramic component to the carbonate phase in the interfacial region.

Melt-Processed Bioactive EVOH Films Incorporated with Ferulic Acid

Alejandro Aragon-Gutierrez et al.

Summary: In this study, antimicrobial and antioxidant films based on EVOH copolymer containing low amounts of ferulic acid were successfully developed by melt extrusion. The films exhibited UV blocking effect, improved thermal stability, increased water vapor and oxygen transmission rates, and showed significant antioxidant and antimicrobial activity. This suggests the potential applications of ferulic acid in active packaging for food products.

Criticality and Life-Cycle Assessment of Materials Used in Fuel-Cell and Hydrogen Technologies

Mitja Mori et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on obtaining data on materials commonly used in fuel-cell and hydrogen technologies and developing an innovative method for material assessment to identify critical materials influencing the environmental impact. Life-cycle inventories were collected for an in-depth material-criticality analysis, with findings showing that polymer-electrolyte-membrane water electrolysers have the highest environmental impacts. Lower impacts were seen in polymer-electrolyte-membrane fuel cells and solid-oxide fuel cells, with alkaline water electrolysers having the lowest impacts.

A review of alternative polymer electrolyte membrane for fuel cell application based on sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone)

Nur Ain Masleeza Harun et al.

Summary: SPEEK is recognized as a promising alternative PEM in fuel cell applications due to its advantageous properties, but its proton conductivity is influenced by the degree of sulfonation. While high DS of SPEEK can produce high proton conductivity, excessive production of DS may have side effects on membrane stability. Therefore, finding the optimal DS of SPEEK is crucial for fabricating PEM alternatives.

Nafion/Surface Modified Ceria Hybrid Membranes for Fuel Cell Application

Polina A. Yurova et al.

Summary: The low chemical durability of proton exchange membranes limits their lifetime in fuel cells, but introducing ceria nanoparticles can improve performance. Hybrid membranes based on Nafion-117 membrane and sulfonic or phosphoric acid functionalized ceria were synthesized for the first time, with membranes containing sulfonic acid modified ceria showing increased conductivity at 30% RH. Fuel cells using membranes with ceria synthesized from cerium (IV) sulfate exhibited significantly higher peak power density compared to pristine Nafion-117 membranes.
