Atorvastatin-Eluting Contact Lenses: Effects of Molecular Imprinting and Sterilization on Drug Loading and Release

Ana F. Pereira-da-Mota et al.

Summary: This study developed bioinspired contact lenses with affinity for atorvastatin by mimicking the active site of HMG-CoA reductase, aiming to potentially treat diabetes-related ocular pathologies. Different imprinted and nonimprinted hydrogels were synthesized and characterized for their ability to load and release atorvastatin. The copolymerization of AEMA and APMA significantly enhanced the affinity for atorvastatin, and high hydrostatic pressure sterilization was found to be effective in maintaining atorvastatin stability and hydrogel performance. Permeability studies through ocular tissues suggested the potential effectiveness of these hydrogels in treating ocular surface diseases.

Equilibrium Sorption of Glucose by Surface Imprinted Organo-Inorganic Sorbents

I. S. Garkushina et al.

Summary: The investigation reveals that modifying the copolymer by forming imprint sites reduces the affinity of sorption surfaces and the monolayer sorption of glucose molecules. Introducing 6 mol % glucose molecules as a template produces homogeneous sorption surfaces, as demonstrated by the match between experimental data and theoretical models. The surfaces of organo-inorganic sorbents available for the target sorbent in a liquid-solid system are determined using Giles classification of experimental sorption isotherms and theoretical models.
