The effects of water absorption and salt fog exposure on agglomerated cork compressive response

Claudia Sergi et al.

Summary: The replacement of synthetic foams with agglomerated cork in sandwich composites meets environmental concerns. Water uptake and diffusivity in agglomerated cork are affected by density and water type, with water and fog moisture causing plasticization and some healing effects after drying due to salt crystal deposits.

Compression impact behaviour of agglomerated cork at intermediate strain rates

Arturo Gomez et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the influence of intermediate strain rates on the compressive behavior of agglomerated cork, finding no significant impact on mechanical properties under dynamic conditions. Variations in properties between different densities of cork and between quasi-static and dynamic conditions were observed.

Evaluation of the Storage Conditions and Type of Cork Stopper on the Quality of Bottled White Wines

Maria Consuelo Diaz-Maroto et al.

Summary: The study examined the effects of different storage conditions and cork stoppers on Verdejo wines, finding that wines stored under commercial conditions experienced greater losses in SO2, changes in color, and alterations in volatile compounds and sensory profile. In contrast, wines stored in darkness at optimal temperature showed minimal changes and preserved their quality. High-quality natural corks and microgranulated corks proved to better preserve the sensory quality of white wines.

Experimental study of natural cork and cork agglomerates as a substitute for expanded polystyrene foams under compressive loads

Ramon Miralbes Buil et al.

Summary: Cork and its derivatives are proposed as substitutes for expanded polystyrene foam due to their renewable origin and higher resilience capability. While cork has a lower environmental footprint, there is still insufficient data on its mechanical behavior which requires further research.

Temperature, strain rate and anisotropy effects on compressive response of natural and synthetic cellular core materials

Claudia Sergi et al.

Summary: The study compared the compressive behavior of synthetic foam and environmentally friendly agglomerated cork under different conditions, revealing the remarkable strain rate sensitivity and increased compressive properties with higher strain rate for both materials. Additionally, a decrease in absorbed energy percentage due to embrittlement effect at lower temperatures was observed. Despite noticeable anisotropy, agglomerated cork is confirmed as a sustainable alternative to petroleum-based core materials with higher dimensional stability for sandwich structures.

Assessment of agglomerated corks and PVC foams cores crashworthiness under multiple-impact events in different loading conditions

Claudia Sergi et al.

Summary: Sandwich composites are important structures in many industrial fields due to their unique flexural properties, but their susceptibility to impact events is a drawback. The core material plays a major role in providing dimensional stability after multiple impacts, with agglomerated cork proving to be a more eco-friendly and performing alternative to traditional foams.
