Nonionic UCST-LCST Diblock Copolymers with Tunable Thermoresponsiveness Synthesized via PhotoRAFT Polymerization

Jingcong Xu et al.

Summary: A nonionic double thermoresponsive diblock copolymer with UCST and LCST phase transitions was synthesized using eco-friendly polymerization technology. One block is responsible for the LCST transition, while the other block is responsible for the UCST transition. The formation of micellar aggregates in water at specific temperatures was confirmed, and the temperature interval between UCST and LCST can be tailored by adjusting the comonomer ratio in the copolymer block.

Amphiphilic thermoresponsive copolymer bottlebrushes: synthesis, characterization, and study of their self-assembly into flower-like micelles

Alexey P. Sivokhin et al.

Summary: Amphiphilic thermoresponsive copolymer bottlebrushes based on MOEGM and DOEGM were synthesized using RAFT and free-radical polymerization in toluene. In water, these copolymer brushes form flower-like micelles with a hydrophobic core and hydrophilic shell. The size and aggregation number of the micelles depend on copolymer composition, chain length, and synthesis method.

Efficient Visible-Light-Driven RAFT Polymerization Mediated by Deep Eutectic Solvents under an Open-to-Air Environment

Chia-Yu Li et al.

Summary: In this study, the use of deep eutectic solvents (DESs) was found to enhance the efficiency of visible light-driven RAFT polymerization, allowing for efficient control of molecular weight distribution and preservation of functional chain ends. DESs were shown to be effective and green media for photo-induced RAFT polymerization without the need for additives or tedious degassing processes.

Divergent Synthesis of Graft and Branched Copolymers through Spatially Controlled Photopolymerization in Flow Reactors

Nathaniel Corrigan et al.

Summary: This research demonstrates the controlled synthesis of graft and branched copolymers without intermediate purification using one-pot or one-pass processes. The formation of poly(methacrylate) copolymers with pendent reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) agent functionalities was performed through selective photoactivation, followed by a nonselective photoinduced chain extension to provide tailored graft copolymers. By alternating the light sources, a range of macromolecular architectures could be prepared from the same starting materials, showing the versatility and flexibility of this approach.

Summary: Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) show promise as photocatalysts in converting light energy into chemical energy for mediating specific types of polymerization reactions. Research results indicate that TFPPy-Bpy-COFs constructed under white light irradiation can achieve excellent temporal control over the RAFT polymerization system and maintain high chain-end fidelity.

Temperature Dependence of the Rayleigh Ratio for Toluene: Thermoresponsive Polymers Characterization

Alexey P. Sivokhin et al.

Summary: Research demonstrated the determination of Rayleigh ratios and depolarization factors for toluene within a wide temperature range, showing linear temperature dependencies. Temperature coefficients were obtained for calculating Rayleigh ratios at different scattering geometries. The importance of selecting optimal measurement temperature when determining molecular weights of thermoresponsive polymers with low LCST values using the SLS method was highlighted.

How does the single unit monomer insertion technique promote kinetic analysis of activation and initiation in photo-RAFT processes?

Lei Zhang et al.

Summary: The RAFT agent acts as a photo-iniferter in most photo-RAFT polymerization systems, but the kinetic analysis is still underexplored due to the complexities in RAFT processes and photochemistry. By synthesizing three model RAFT agents with different penultimate units but the same terminal units and investigating their consumption rates in single monomer additions, a kinetic model was developed to analyze the distinct rates of RAFT agent consumption. The kinetic rate equation reveals a positive correlation between the apparent RAFT consumption rate coefficient, the rate coefficients of photo-dissociation of the RAFT agents (k(d)), and radical-monomer addition (k(p)).

Initiation of RAFT Polymerization: Electrochemically Initiated RAFT Polymerization in Emulsion (Emulsion eRAFT), and Direct PhotoRAFT Polymerization of Liquid Crystalline Monomers

Caroline Bray et al.

Summary: Two important advances in radical polymerization with reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT polymerization) are reported. Electrochemically initiated emulsion RAFT (eRAFT) polymerization and direct photoinitiated (visible light) RAFT polymerization provide rapid and effective routes to high-quality polymers. The use of amphiphilic macroRAFT agent composition and numerical simulation are important tools in optimizing polymerization conditions.
