Engineered hierarchical porous carbons for supercapacitor applications through chemical pretreatment and activation of biomass precursors

Gunes A. Yakaboylu et al.

Summary: The study examined the impact of chemical pretreatment time on the activated carbons derived from Miscanthus grass biomass. By controlling the pretreatment duration, the microstructure, chemistry, and active functional groups were adjusted, leading to improved electrochemical performance of the activated carbons. The optimal KOH pretreatment resulted in high specific capacitance, cycling stability, specific energy, and specific power, highlighting the importance of pore volume, cellulose content, C/O ratio, and surface chemistry on the electrochemical performance.

High-performance Li-Ion capacitor constructed from biomass-derived porous carbon and high-rate Li4Ti5O12

Yan-Ting Lin et al.

Summary: In this study, biomass-derived porous carbon and high-rate Li4Ti5O12 (LTO) were prepared as cathode and anode materials for Li-ion capacitors (LICs). The bio-derived carbon with excellent electrochemical properties and the modified LTO with enhanced rate performance successfully addressed the kinetic mismatch issue between the cathode and anode in LICs. The LIC fabricated by combining the bio-derived porous carbon and high-rate LTO exhibited high energy/power density and maintained good cycling stability after 10,000 cycles.

Biomass-derived activated carbon material from native European deciduous trees as an inexpensive and sustainable energy material for supercapacitor application

Amrita Jain et al.

Summary: In this research, a novel activated carbon derived from a mixture of native European trees was synthesized and used as the electrode material for supercapacitors. The prepared carbon exhibited good porosity and a high specific surface area, delivering a specific capacitance of 24 F g(-1) with excellent cycling stability over 10000 charge/discharge cycles. This study demonstrates the facile synthesis of biomass-derived carbon for versatile electrode applications in supercapacitors.

Dual-doping activated carbon with hierarchical pore structure derived from polymeric porous monolith for high performance EDLC

Guangxu Fu et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated the fabrication of nitrogen and sulfur dual-doped activated carbon with a hierarchical pore structure, showing high specific surface area, developed pore structure, and appropriate nitrogen and sulfur content. The optimized NSC-based electrode exhibited high specific capacitance, superior rate capability, and acceptable cycling stability, while the assembled carbon-based symmetric capacitor showed acceptable energy density and remarkable power density. These results highlight the potential of NSC as a competitive candidate for carbon-based electrode materials for electric double layer capacitor applications.
