Effect of a Reactive-Type Flame Retardant on Thermal Stability of Thiol-ene Composites

Xiaohui Bao et al.

Summary: A reactive-type flame retardant, polyvinylphenylsilsesquioxane (PVP), was synthesized and incorporated into thiol-ene (TE) to prepare a flame-retardant TE (FRTE) composite. The results showed that the addition of PVP improved the thermal stability of TE in nitrogen, suggesting that PVP could promote the formation of char residue to block heat flow and delay thermal degradation of the TE matrix.

Fire Retardancy and Thermogravimetric Kinetics of Thiol-Ene Degradation as Affected by Added 9,10-Dihydro-9-Oxa-10-Phosphaphenanthrene-10-Oxide (DOPO)

Shiqi Chen et al.

Summary: The addition of the fire retardant DOPO significantly enhanced the fire retardancy of thiol-ene polymer, reducing the peak heat release rate and total heat release compared to pure PTE. The activation energies of the fire retardant PTE were lower than those of pure PTE, indicating improved thermal stability and fire retardancy.

Synthesis and characterization of flame-retardant-wrapped carbon nanotubes and its flame retardancy in epoxy nanocomposites

Jiangbo Wang

Summary: The study focused on wrapping carbon nanotubes with the novel phosphorus-silicon containing flame-retardant DOPO-V-PA, and incorporating them into epoxy resin to enhance flame retardancy and dispersion. The nanocomposites showed improved flame retardancy with a reduction in peak heat release rate (PHRR) and total heat release (THR), as well as better dispersion of CNTs-DOPO-V-PA in the EP matrix compared to pristine CNTs.

Role of thiol oxidation by air in the mechanism of the self-initiated thermal thiol-ene polymerization

Cuong Minh Quoc Le et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the significant role of thiyl radicals produced by thiol oxidation in driving the spontaneous thiol-ene polymerization in the absence of solvents, heating, and intentional radical formation. Factors influencing reactivity, kinetics, solvation of thiols, and nature of initiating radicals were studied through various techniques, showing that the polarization of S-H bond drives thiol air oxidation. Thiols with electron-withdrawing substituents and hydrogen-bonded thiol-solvent (or thiol-alkene) complexes promote self-initiation by increasing S-H bond polarization.
