Novel weft-knitted spacer structure with silicone tube inlay for enhancing mechanical behavior

Annie Yu et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a novel structure that integrates an inlaid silicone tube in the connective layer of spacer fabric to enhance its performance. Two inlaying methods are used to experimentally evaluate the effect of the silicone inlay, showing that it effectively increases the compression resistance and impact force absorption of the fabric. Different inlay patterns and stitch densities can modify the compression behavior of the fabric.

Effect of Silicone Inlaid Materials on Reinforcing Compressive Strength of Weft-Knitted Spacer Fabric for Cushioning Applications

Annie Yu et al.

Summary: Spacer fabrics are commonly used as cushioning materials, and can be reinforced by inlaying different types of silicone-based elastic tubes to improve compression properties. The presence of inlaid tubes does not affect the compression behavior of spacer fabrics at an initial compressive strain of 10%. The Young's modulus of the inlaid tubes correlates with fabric compression. Among different samples, spacer fabrics inlaid with highly elastic silicone foam tubes can absorb more compression energy, while those inlaid with silicone tubes of higher tensile strength have higher compressive stiffness.
