Insights into the Payne Effect of Carbon Black Filled Styrene-butadiene Rubber Compounds

An Zhao et al.

Summary: The study suggests that in CB-filled rubber compounds, the Payne effect is mainly influenced by the disentanglement of the SBR matrix, while bound rubber adjacent to CB particles helps with the reconstruction of the CB network and improves the reversibility of the Payne effect.

Influence of carbon black on the Payne effect of filled natural rubber compounds

Xuanyu Shi et al.

Summary: The enhancement of the Payne effect by incorporating carbon black in natural rubber has been investigated, with findings showing that low temperature and high frequency accelerate the effect. The destruction and recovery of carbon black agglomerates are not synchronized with the appearance of the Payne effect, indicating that the structural evolution of the filler phase is not the main factor dominating the effect.

Filler-polymer interaction investigated using graphitized carbon blacks: Another attempt to explain reinforcement

Jan Plagge et al.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between filler surface properties and compound properties, focusing on large-strain softening effects in EPDM filled with carbon blacks treated at different temperatures. The results suggest that the reinforcement effect is best explained by chemical filler-polymer bonds, while low-strain modulus and equilibrium hysteresis are influenced by physical compatibility.

Nature of Carbon Black Reinforcement of Rubber: Perspective on the Original Polymer Nanocomposite

Christopher G. Robertson et al.

Summary: The addition of carbon black particles to elastomeric polymers is crucial for the successful industrial use of rubber in many applications, but the origin of stiffness enhancement in elastomers from incorporating nanometer-scale carbon black particles is still debated. Experimental findings suggest that heat treatment of carbon black can significantly reduce the filler reinforcement effect in rubber. Furthermore, various chemical modification approaches have been employed to improve polymer-filler interactions and reinforcement.

Die shape optimization for extrudate swell using feedback control

M. M. A. Spanjaards et al.

Summary: This paper presents a novel approach to solving the inverse problem of three-dimensional die design for extrudate swell using real-time active control scheme, with a feedback connection between the corner-line finite element method and the controller. The method is validated by optimization results for 2D axisymmetric extrusion flows of a viscoelastic fluid for different Weissenberg numbers, as well as showing results for Newtonian fluid exiting dies with increasing complexity in shape in 3D. The effectiveness of the method in obtaining desired extrudate shapes of viscoelastic fluid for different Weissenberg numbers and amounts of shear-thinning is demonstrated.

Common Origin of Filler Network Related Contributions to Reinforcement and Dissipation in Rubber Composites

Sriharish Malebennur Nagaraja et al.

Summary: A comparative study on the visco-elastic properties of carbon black filled composites with different rubber matrices was conducted, revealing significant contributions of the filler network to reinforcement and dissipation in the composites. The temperature dependence and composition of the rubber matrix play important roles in dictating the behavior of the filler network, indicating the crucial impact of rubber-filler interactions on the performance of rubber composites.

On the Influence of Viscoelastic Modeling in Fluid Flow Simulations of Gum Acrylonitrile Butadiene Rubber

Sebastian Stieger et al.

Summary: CFD simulation is a crucial tool for engineers to study design options efficiently, but its accuracy relies heavily on boundary conditions and rheological equations. In this study, the viscoelastic nature of unfilled NBR is analyzed using the K-BKZ model, demonstrating the importance of accurate viscoelastic modeling for rubber materials.
