Synthesis and Characterization of Biobased Polyesters with Tunable Tg by ROCOP of Beta-Elemene Oxides and Phthalic Anhydride

Francesco Della Monica et al.

Summary: This study reports the use of terpene-based oxides derived from beta-elemene in the development of new functional semiaromatic polyesters. By sequentially and selectively transforming double bonds through epoxidation, the degree and nature of functionality in the polymer backbone can be precisely manipulated. Furthermore, direct access to cross-linked polyesters with a higher Tg is demonstrated through ring-opening polymerization of bifunctional beta-elemene dioxide and phthalic anhydride.

High-performance bio-based epoxies from ferulic acid and furfuryl alcohol: synthesis and properties

Jiale Ye et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated the synthesis of high-performance bio-based thermosets by directly functionalizing ferulic acid to diepoxy and co-cross-linking it with furfuryl alcohol-derived monoepoxy. The resulting material showed comparable or even higher thermal and mechanical properties to bisphenol A epoxy, offering a sustainable alternative. The utilization of the carbon-carbon double bond in the ferulic acid-based diepoxy for further enhancement through the Diels-Alder reaction with glycidyl ether of furfuryl alcohol also contributed to the overall performance improvement.
