Characterization of biofilm formation and reduction of hexavalent chromium by bacteria isolated from tannery sludge

Annapurna Maurya et al.

Summary: The study investigated the biofilm formation ability of Bacillus vallismortis, Bacillus haynesii, and Alcaligenes aquatilis isolated from tannery sludge under variable environmental conditions. The results showed that the biofilm formation activity of Alcaligenes aquatilis significantly increased at pH 5.0 and pH 9.0. Additionally, bacterial biofilm exhibited greater potential in removing Cr(VI) compared to planktonic cells.

Oxidative Stress in Bacteria and the Central Dogma of Molecular Biology

Michel Fasnacht et al.

Summary: Since the great oxidation event, Earth's cellular life forms have had to deal with reactive oxygen species (ROS) affecting biomolecules and cellular metabolism. Increased ROS levels in the biosphere represent growing stress and shape species evolution. Systems have evolved to remove ROS and repair damage, but oxidative stress occurs if ROS surpass the cell's capacity.
