Spectral expansions of open and dispersive optical systems: Gaussian regularization and convergence

B. Stout et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a multipolar Gaussian regularization method for inner products of resonant states, which provides analytical results for key inner product integrals in problematic regions. The method is applicable to arbitrary scattering geometries and provides semi-analytical benchmark results for spherical scatterers, while highlighting the lack of convergence in directly truncated spectral expansions and the necessity of adding non-resonant contributions. Solutions to these difficulties are illustrated in the case of dispersive media spheres, with the potential for generalization to arbitrary spectral expansions of resonant states.

Fermi's Golden Rule for Spontaneous Emission in Absorptive and Amplifying Media

Sebastian Franke et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the breakdown of the photonic spontaneous emission (SE) formula in absorptive and amplifying media, and presents a corrected Fermi's golden rule and master equation for a quantum two-level system. The results show a net positive modification of the decay rate and the failure of commonly adopted formulas based solely on the local density of states.
