Microstructure evolution and hardness of hot dip aluminized coating on pure iron and EUROFER 97 steel: Effect of substrate chemistry and heat treatment

Kaushal Kishore et al.

Summary: EUROFER 97 steel is a potential material for the first wall of fusion reactor, and aluminide diffusion barrier coatings are effective in mitigating corrosion and tritium permeation issues. The performance of the coating is influenced by the nature of intermetallic phases and their microstructure. The major phase formed during hot dip aluminizing (HDA) process was Fe2Al5, with subsequent heat treatment transforming it into FeAl2, FeAl(Cr) and alpha-Fe(Al, Cr) in HDA EUROFER steel due to interdiffusion of Fe, Al and Cr. No trace of FeAl2 was found in HDA iron.

Characterization of Hot-Dip Aluminized C45 Carbon Steel before and after Cyclic Heating in Air

Hawkar J. Muhammed et al.

Summary: The experimental study focused on the surface characteristics of hot-dip aluminized C45 carbon steel under high temperature conditions. The results showed that the close-to-surface top layer of the coated steel converted to iron-aluminum intermetallics, while the innermost intermetallic phase appeared compact and sound, indicating high chemical and mechanical stability of the coating. This study confirms that aluminizing inexpensive carbon steel can effectively prevent excessive oxide scale formation at high temperatures.
