Cell-based therapy in soft tissue sports injuries of the knee: a systematic review

Nardeen Kader et al.

Summary: The evidence for the effectiveness of cell-based therapies in soft-tissue sports injuries of the knee is currently lacking high-quality support. There is a need for more standardized protocols and reporting, as well as further basic scientific research and large clinical trials to better understand the potential of MSCs and improve their application in clinical settings.

Assessment of safety and efficacy of intra-articular injection of stromal vascular fraction for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis-a systematic review

Saseendar Shanmugasundaram et al.

Summary: Intra-articular injection of SVF is shown to be a safe and effective treatment for knee osteoarthritis, with improvements in pain, range of motion, and minimal donor-site morbidity. Further comparative Level I studies are needed to evaluate the use of adjuvants with SVF and compare it with other regenerative therapies.

Intra-articular injection of human synovium-derived mesenchymal stem cells in beagles with surgery-induced osteoarthritis

Yong Sang Kim et al.

Summary: In this study, the therapeutic effects of intra-articular human synovium-derived MSCs (hSD-MSCs) in a canine model of osteoarthritis were investigated. The results demonstrated that intra-articular injection of hSD-MSCs improved cartilage structure, promoted ECM synthesis, and inhibited the inflammatory response in canine OA, indicating potential as a treatment option for OA in both animals and humans.

Comparative analysis of mouse bone marrow and adipose tissue mesenchymal stem cells for critical limb ischemia cell therapy

Pegah Nammian et al.

Summary: The study compared the effects of allogeneic bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) and adipose tissue mesenchymal stem cells (AT-MSCs) in the treatment of critical limb ischemia (CLI). The results indicated that BM-MSCs had a stronger effect on endothelial cell migration, muscle restructure, functional improvements, and neovascularization in ischemic tissues compared to AT-MSCs. This suggests that BM-MSC transplantation could be a more effective therapy for diseases with insufficient angiogenesis, such as hindlimb ischemia.

Management of Refractory Pain After Total Joint Replacement

Max L. Willinger et al.

Summary: This review discusses the increasing burden of chronic pain after total joint replacement, particularly total knee replacement, and explores various successful modalities for managing this type of pain, including genicular nerve radioablation therapy, neuromuscular electrical stimulation, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, and peripheral subcutaneous field stimulation. Recent studies have shown the effectiveness of these treatments in improving pain and functional outcomes in patients with chronic pain after TKA.

Anti-Inflammatory Effects of Conditioned Medium of Periodontal Ligament-Derived Stem Cells on Chondrocytes, Synoviocytes, and Meniscus Cells

Chun-Yuh Huang et al.

Summary: This study showed that the conditioned medium from periodontal ligament-derived stem cells (PDLSCs) prevented the upregulation of inflammatory and catabolic gene expressions by IL-1 beta in chondrocytes, synoviocytes, and meniscus cells. The anti-inflammatory effects of PDLSC conditioned medium were consistent across donors and cell subcultures, indicating its potential as a treatment to inhibit inflammation in osteoarthritis.

Extracellular Vesicles from Mesenchymal Stem Cells as Potential Treatments for Osteoarthritis

Nur Azira Mohd Noor et al.

Summary: Osteoarthritis is a chronic degenerative disorder of the joint that is becoming more prevalent due to aging populations. Current treatments are limited to painkillers, anti-inflammatory drugs, and surgery for joint replacement. Extracellular vesicles and mesenchymal stem cells show potential for OA treatment, but face challenges in implementation.
