On Wind-Driven Energetics of Subtropical Gyres

Q. Jamet et al.

Summary: The flow of energy in wind-driven circulation is examined through a combination of theoretical and numerical studies. The analysis shows that the primary sink of wind input into the mean circulation is in the separated jet, and not the interior. Wind energy input is much smaller than interior energy fluxes, indicating that the general circulation largely recirculates energy.

Diagnosing Cross-Scale Kinetic Energy Exchanges From Two Submesoscale Permitting Ocean Models

Adekunle Ajayi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the distribution and exchanges of kinetic energy at fine scales in the open ocean using two high-resolution simulations. The results show different behaviors in summer and winter, as well as complex dynamics of forward and inverse cascades in the ocean.

Role of Mixed-Layer Instabilities in the Seasonal Evolution of Eddy Kinetic Energy Spectra in a Global Submesoscale Permitting Simulation

Hemant Khatri et al.

Summary: The study reveals that in high kinetic energy regions, submesoscale processes have a significant impact, resulting in relatively shallow kinetic energy spectra in winter and steeper spectra in summer. The transition in kinetic energy spectra goes through two phases, late autumn and late winter, with mixed-layer instabilities playing a key role in the process.

On dynamically unresolved oceanic mesoscale motions

Pavel Berloff et al.

Summary: The study suggests using a coarse-grid model to reconstruct dynamically unresolved eddies rather than using local spatio-temporal filtering. By translating field errors into error-correcting forcing, the approach enhances the coarse-grid model solution towards the reference flow, demonstrating advantages and feasibility.
