Levels of Mercury, Methylmercury and Selenium in Fish: Insights into Children Food Safety

Grazia Barone et al.

Summary: The study measured total mercury and methylmercury concentrations in various commercially important fish species and assessed the potential risks associated with them for children's health. The results suggested that selenium could alleviate the potential toxicity of mercury to a certain extent, and it was recommended that children should consume fish in moderation, especially swordfish and tunas.

Eating catch of the day: the diet of porbeagle shark Lamna nasus (Bonnaterre 1788) based on stomach content analysis, and the interaction with trawl fisheries in the south-western Atlantic (52° S-56° S)

Mauro Belleggia et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the diet of porbeagle sharks in the South-West Atlantic Ocean, focusing on their consumption of hoki and southern blue whiting. Results showed that larger sharks preyed exclusively on large fish while smaller sharks consumed both small and large teleost fish. The ecological role of porbeagle sharks in the SWAO has implications for fisheries management.

Mercury and selenium concentrations in different tissues of brown smooth-hound shark (Mustelus henlei) from the western coast of Baja California Sur, Mexico

Laura Maria Pantoja-Echevarria et al.

Summary: The study conducted in Baja California Sur, Mexico, found higher mercury and selenium concentrations in brown smooth-hound sharks and their prey, but within safe limits; selenium counteracts mercury toxicity in the liver, while the opposite occurs in the muscle; significant differences in mercury and selenium accumulation were observed between females and males.
