Seasonal ice flow velocity variations of Polar Record Glacier, East Antarctica during 2016-2019 using Sentinel-1 data

Kiledar Singh Tomar et al.

Summary: This study investigated the ice flow dynamics of the Polar Record Glacier from December to April between 2016 and 2019 using remote sensing techniques. The results showed fluctuating ice flow velocities, with higher speeds near the glacier terminus and lower values towards the ice sheet portion. The study also observed changes in the glacier's front position and total area, attributing the increased speed in early winter to ice-free water surrounding the glacier terminus.

Spatial surface velocity pattern in the glaciers of Chandra Basin, Western Himalaya

Lavkush Kumar Patel et al.

Summary: This study monitored four glaciers in the Himalayas and found significant differences in surface velocity between different types of glaciers, with clean-type glaciers showing faster speeds. The research also highlighted the impact of factors such as lakes, debris, slope, and convergence of glacier channels on glacier surface velocity.

Glacier mass loss in the Alaknanda basin, Garhwal Himalaya on a decadal scale

S. N. Remya et al.

Summary: The Himalayan glaciers have a significant impact on major river systems such as the Indus and Ganges. This study used satellite data and other measurements to estimate the elevation change and mass budget of glaciers in the Alaknanda Basin. The results showed sustained mass loss in the region, highlighting the importance of understanding glacier changes on a multi-decadal scale.

Automatic delineation of glacier grounding lines in differential interferometric synthetic-aperture radar data using deep learning

Yara Mohajerani et al.

Summary: The study presents a method for automatically delineating the grounding line of marine-terminating glaciers using a fully-convolutional neural network, efficiently and accompanied by uncertainty estimates. The value of machine learning approach is demonstrated in challenging situations to map grounding lines.

Future Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) hazard of the South Lhonak Lake, Sikkim Himalaya

Ashim Sattar et al.

Summary: This study assessed the future glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) hazard of the South Lhonak Lake in the Sikkim Himalaya, considering the potential impacts of continued glacier retreat and avalanche events. The results indicate that the lake's growth may lead to overtopping of the frontal moraine, triggering GLOFs and causing significant downstream impacts.

Increased Ice Thinning over Svalbard Measured by ICESat/ICESat-2 Laser Altimetry

Lukas Sochor et al.

Summary: This study used spaceborne laser altimetry data from the ICESat and ICESat-2 missions to analyze the ice elevation and mass changes on glaciers in Svalbard, finding a decrease in mass loss rate over the past few decades which is linked to Arctic warming.
