Modelling and accessing land degradation vulnerability using remote sensing techniques and the analytical hierarchy process approach

Abebe Debele Tolche et al.

Summary: The study in Ethiopia identified and mapped vulnerable zones for land degradation using precipitation, NDVI, LST, topography, and pedological properties. The NDVI was found to be the most significant parameter in determining land degradation vulnerability. The research utilized geospatial techniques and the AHP approach, with validation through Google Earth image and Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) analysis, showing high prediction accuracy for LD vulnerability zone modeling.

Application of fuzzy analytical hierarchy process for assessment of desertification sensitive areas in North West of Morocco

Hicham Ait Kacem et al.

Summary: The study utilized the modified MEDALUS method with a fuzzy inference system to identify environmentally sensitive areas to desertification in the Drader basin in Morocco. The results showed that fragile and critical areas comprise a majority of the region, with key characteristics including low plant cover, erosion resistance, and management quality.

Land degradation assessment in an African dryland context based on the Composite Land Degradation Index and mapping method

Felicia O. Akinyemi et al.

Summary: This study used the Composite Land Degradation Index to assess land degradation in the agro-pastoral region of Palapye, Botswana, revealing that areas near settlements at elevations between 773 and 893 m were most severely degraded, primarily due to human activities. The study developed a comprehensive list of land degradation indicators and created additional symbols for mapping indicators, facilitating monitoring of land degradation. The integrative and spatially explicit procedure used in this study can be adapted for assessing and validating local-level land degradation baseline and estimates towards operationalizing Land Degradation Neutrality in all countries.

Mapping and Quantifying Comprehensive Land Degradation Status Using Spatial Multicriteria Evaluation Technique in the Headwaters Area of Upper Blue Nile River

Alelgn Ewunetu et al.

Summary: Mapping and quantifying land degradation status is crucial for sustainable landscape management. This study used GIS, remote sensing, and multicriteria analysis to assess land degradation in the north Gojjam sub-basin, finding high soil loss risk and moderate to high levels of biological and physical degradation. Integrated land management practices are needed to address these issues.

Land Degradation Vulnerability Mapping in a Newly-Reclaimed Desert Oasis in a Hyper-Arid Agro-Ecosystem Using AHP and Geospatial Techniques

Ahmed S. Abuzaid et al.

Summary: Modeling land degradation vulnerability in newly-reclaimed desert oases using remote sensing data, GIS tools, and Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) showed that chemical soil quality, physical soil quality, and vegetation quality were the main drivers of land degradation vulnerability in the studied area. The LDV map indicated that nearly 85% of the area was prone to moderate degradation risks.

Modeling and Assessment of Land Degradation Vulnerability in Semi-arid Ecosystem of Southern India Using Temporal Satellite Data, AHP and GIS

P. Sandeep et al.

Summary: This study aimed to model and assess land degradation vulnerability in the semi-arid ecosystem of Rayalaseema region of southern India by analyzing NDVI, LST, rainfall, terrain characteristics, and pedological parameters using AHP and GIS. The results showed that inadequate rainfall, high temperature, problematic soils, and lack of conservation measures were the main factors contributing to land degradation in the study area. The study demonstrated the potential of AHP- and GIS-based modeling in assessing land degradation vulnerability using time-series MODIS NDVI and TRMM rainfall products, terrain characteristics, and pedological parameters.
