Soil degradation in the European Mediterranean region: Processes, status and consequences

Carla S. S. Ferreira et al.

Summary: This paper examines the issue of soil degradation in the European Mediterranean region, highlighting the importance of soil resources and the current challenges they face. Suggestions are made for establishing a soil monitoring system to support decision making and achieve sustainable development goals.

A USLE-based model with modified LS-factor combined with sediment delivery module for Alpine basins

Konstantinos Kaffas et al.

Summary: This study analyzed sedimentation rates in a reservoir of a hydropower dam in South Tyrol, Italian Alps, focusing on a five-year period between two consecutive sediment flushing operations. The calculated reservoir sedimentation rates using different methods showed deviations from measured values, demonstrating the efficiency of the applied techniques for estimating reservoir sedimentation rates in an Alpine basin.

A framework for investigating the land degradation neutrality-Disaster risk reduction nexus at the sub-national scales

Mario J. Al Sayah et al.

Summary: Specific guidelines and a detailed land classification method were proposed to support the Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) concept, complemented by the introduction of indicator alpha. Findings revealed that Aley's land cover development did not consider land potential or hazard potentiality, leading to degraded or at-risk lands. The LDN intervention aimed to optimize land use by shifting a portion of lands to adequately used states.

On the use of the Land Degradation Neutrality concept in mediterranean watersheds for land restoration and erosion counteraction

Mario J. Al Sayah et al.

Summary: This study implemented the Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) concept in the Nahr Ibrahim watershed in Lebanon, using soil erosion as an indicator and proposing an LDN scenario for land restoration and erosion prevention measures. The results showed the efficiency of LDN in not only land restoration, but also as a powerful counter-erosion measure.

Regional Farmers' Perception and Societal Issues in Vineyards Affected by High Erosion Rates

Artemi Cerda et al.

Summary: The use of catch crops in a viticultural region in Eastern Spain showed benefits such as increased soil organic matter, higher infiltration rates, delayed runoff generation, and reduced runoff rates and soil erosion. However, farmers were mainly against their use due to concerns about them being perceived as 'dirty', high costs, and loss of respect from other farmers.
