Immobilization of heavy metals in biochar derived from co-pyrolysis of sewage sludge and calcium sulfate

Liheng Liu et al.

Summary: The study showed that in the co-pyrolysis of sewage sludge and CaSO4 to produce biochar, appropriate dosage of CaSO4, high pyrolysis temperature, and suitable holding time can improve the immobilization rate of heavy metals. Suitable pyrolysis temperature and holding time promote the formation of crystals and particles in biochar, leading to the immobilization of more heavy metals.

Comparative study on intercalation-exfoliation and thermal activation modified kaolin for heavy metals immobilization during high-organic solid waste pyrolysis

Haoran Du et al.

Summary: With the implementation of China's new municipal solid waste classification policy, attention has been focused on achieving waste-to-energy disposal of dry waste. Pyrolysis conversion of high-organic solid waste is a promising method for treating solid waste. The addition of kaolin as an additive during pyrolysis can effectively immobilize and stabilize heavy metals, with effective solid enrichment performance observed between 450-650 degrees Celsius.

Development of an up-scalable rotary kiln design for the pyrolysis of waste tyres

Fabian Proch et al.

Summary: This study developed an indirectly heated rotary kiln design for the pyrolysis of waste tyres based on numerical simulation results, preserving heat and mass transfer characteristics and ensuring representativeness of laboratory scale findings for industrial scale. The use of numerical simulation minimizes risks of scaled-up designs falling short of desired performance values.

Green production of a novel sorbent from kaolin for capturing gaseous PbCl2 in a furnace

Jianrui Zha et al.

Summary: The new sorbent showed 26% higher adsorption efficiency than raw kaolin at 900 degrees C, due to its larger surface area and reformed structure. Increasing the modification pressure improved these properties.

Effects of different types of biochar on the properties and reactivity of nano zero-valent iron in soil remediation

Chengjie Xue et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that stabilizing nZVI particles with different types of biochar (BC) can enhance their stability and mobility, leading to improved removal of BDE209 from contaminated soil. The transport behavior of BC@nZVI composites in porous media showed better performance compared to bare nZVI particles, with potential for increased efficiency at higher flow velocities and in larger porous media.

Enhancing the adsorption function of biochar by mechanochemical graphitization for organic pollutant removal

Peidong Su et al.

Summary: Biochar has been studied extensively as an adsorbent for treating water pollution. This study introduced mechanical treatment to prepare biochar, reducing calcination temperature and improving adsorption capacity. The mechanochemically treated biochar showed significantly better removal performance for organic contaminants compared to pristine biochar.
