Towards high-quality biodiesel production from microalgae using original and anaerobically-digested livestock wastewater

Gang Li et al.

Summary: This study focused on the simultaneous treatment of livestock wastewater and high-quality biodiesel production using microalgae technology. Higher microalgal biomass production was observed in the original piggery effluent medium, while microalgae grown in anaerobically-digested effluent had a higher lipid content, which is favorable for biodiesel production. The N/P ratio in the original effluent was closer to the optimal ratio for microalgae growth compared to the anaerobically-digested effluent, indicating potential for sustainable livestock waste management.

Evolution of humic substances in polymerization of polyphenol and amino acid based on non-destructive characterization

Jianmei Zou et al.

Summary: This study investigated the role of MnO2 in the evolution of humic substances during oxidative polymerization and found a synergistic effect between MnO2 and O-2. The presence of MnO2 affected the structure of humification products, as demonstrated by C-13 NMR analysis. The results provided new insights into the theory of abiotic humification.

Enhanced darkening effect from the interaction of MnO2 and oxygen on the component evolution of amino-phenolic humic-like substances

Yingchao Zhang et al.

Summary: Metallic oxides play a crucial role in humification, with oxygen and MnO2 influencing the compositional evolution of humic-like acids (HLAs). While oxygen promotes the formation and accumulation of HLAs, it decreases the reaction rate. The release of carbon dioxide during the process of fulvic-like acids (FLAs) formation is oxygen-independent.

Fluorescence analysis allows to predict the oxidative capacity of humic quinones in dissolved organic matter: implication for pollutant degradation

Davide Palma et al.

Summary: This study explored the possibility of predicting the production of oxidant species in DOM through fluorescence analysis. The research found a strong correlation between the intensity of two specific humic-like fluorophores and the ability of water samples to generate reactive species, suggesting that monitoring these fluorophores could predict DOM's ability to degrade pollutants in surface waters.

Electrochemical oxidation pretreatment for enhanced methane potential from landfill leachate in anaerobic co-digestion process: Performance, Gompertz model, and energy assessment

Hasan Pasalari et al.

Summary: The study investigated the use of electrochemical oxidation (EO) to improve the biodegradability and energy output of landfill leachate (LL) in anaerobic co-digestion processes. Optimal operational parameters were identified for increased soluble COD (sCOD) and total volatile fatty acid (TVFA), resulting in higher methane yield and energy efficiency. Results showed that EO pretreatment significantly reduced lag phase and improved methane production in high-volume LL anaerobic co-digestion reactors, validating the feasibility and cost-effectiveness of the method.

Humic substances reduce the erodibility of soils in mining areas

Gricel Alcira Portillo Miranda et al.

Summary: The research shows that humic substances obtained from recycling mineral coal tailings can reduce the environmental impact of mining and increase soil stability. The long-term stability advantage of humic substances is clear, and their effects on stability are more pronounced over a longer period of time.

Analysis of Solid-State Reaction Mechanisms with Two-Dimensional Fourier Transform Infrared Correlation Spectroscopy

Nataraju Bodappa et al.

Summary: The utility of two-dimensional generalized correlation spectroscopy (2D-COS) for tracking complex solid-state reactions is demonstrated using infrared spectra acquired during a photochemically induced decomposition reaction. Through the analysis of 11 different thin films, it was found that the rate of loss of chelated ligands is linearly correlated with the asymmetric stretching frequency of monodentate ligands, but exhibits a V shape when plotted against the electronegativity of the metal center. The results suggest that loss of chelated ligands proceeds via C-O scission for highly electronegative transition metals but M-O scission for transition metals with low electronegativity, establishing 2D-COS as a powerful tool for mechanistic analysis of complex chemical reactions.

Insights into the underlying mechanisms for integrated inactivation of A. spiroides and depression of disinfection byproducts by plasma oxidation

Ruigang Wang et al.

Summary: This study revealed the potential mechanisms for the effective inactivation of A. spiroides and inhibition of the following formation of the DBPs. Transcriptomic analysis and EEM-PARAFAC analysis demonstrated the impact of reactive oxidative species on A. spiroides and AOM, which significantly inhibited the formation potentials of DBPs.

Protein-derived structures determines the redox capacity of humic acids formed during hyperthermophilic composting

Xiaoming Liu et al.

Summary: The study found that hyperthermophilic composting (HTC) can accelerate the formation of the redox structure of humic acid (HA), improving its redox capacity; rapid transformation of aromatic compounds and nitrogen-containing compounds are key factors in the formation of HA, while the relative abundance of lipids decreases; protein-derived compounds determine the redox capacity of HA.
