Research progress on distribution, sources, identification, toxicity, and biodegradation of microplastics in the ocean, freshwater, and soil environment

Qinghui Sun et al.

Summary: This review discusses the distribution and possible sources of microplastics in aquatic and terrestrial environments, as well as their adverse effects on natural creatures. It summarizes methods for identifying microplastics and their biodegradation. Understanding microplastic pollution, assessing and controlling microplastic exposure are of great significance.

Atmospheric deposition of microplastics in the coastal zone: Characteristics and relationship with meteorological factors

Karolina Szewc et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the quantitative and qualitative compositions of microplastics deposited from the atmosphere in the coastal zone, and investigated the links with meteorological factors. The deposited microplastics were predominantly fibers, with smaller size classes dominating and mainly originating from textiles, packaging materials, and fishing gear. Air mass trajectory analysis showed that microplastics deposited in Gdynia mainly came from local sources.

Modeling the Conditional Fragmentation-Induced Microplastic Distribution

Liuwei Wang et al.

Summary: The study investigates the size distribution of microplastics in the soil environment, revealing trends in the size changes of microplastics under different land use settings and proposing conditional aging as a controlling factor for the size distribution. The model is suitable for describing the size distribution of microplastics from different sources and aging processes, and can be used for various research purposes such as source identification, transport modeling, and risk assessment.

Moving policy and regulation forward for single-use plastic alternatives

Wenbing Tan et al.

Summary: Single-use plastics, widely consumed due to rapid social and economic development, pose threats to ecosystem health and sustainable human development. Innovative sustainable alternatives and collaboration among governments, enterprises, and the public offer promising solutions to this issue. Promoting the development of single-use plastic alternatives requires improving legislation, industrial policies, technological innovation, and public engagement.
