Daily and intermittent smoking are associated with low prefrontal volume and low concentrations of prefrontal glutamate, creatine, myo-inositol, and N-acetylaspartate

Paul Faulkner et al.

Summary: This study found that intermittent smoking, like daily smoking, results in lower concentrations of glutamate and lower gray matter volume in the prefrontal cortex. Efforts to quit smoking should consider both daily and intermittent smokers, rather than just focusing on daily smokers.

Preserved cholinergic forebrain integrity reduces structural connectome vulnerability in mild cognitive impairment

Rok Berlot et al.

Summary: Neurodegeneration causes redistribution of information processing, impacting the reorganization of the structural connectome and vulnerability. Cortical acetylcholine aids in adapting to pathology within the memory circuit, but its broader impact on whole-brain networks is uncertain. Larger volumes of the cholinergic basal forebrain (CBFB) in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) are associated with efficient network topology and reduced impact of specific lesions, suggesting a protective effect against the global impact of simulated strategic lesions.

Altered Functional Connectivity of the Basal Nucleus of Meynert in Subjective Cognitive Impairment, Early Mild Cognitive Impairment, and Late Mild Cognitive Impairment

Wenwen Xu et al.

Summary: This study identified abnormal patterns of basal nucleus of Meynert (BNM) functional connectivity in the spectrum of early Alzheimer's disease (AD) and found that these alterations are closely related to cognitive domains. The findings provide a new perspective for identifying the early disease spectrum of AD and support the role of the cholinergic theory in AD.
