Vegetation attributes drive the taxonomic richness and functional composition of beetles and spiders in mountainous urban green spaces

Frederick Gyasi Damptey et al.

Summary: Urban green spaces enhance the quality of life and serve as habitat for organisms. However, human activities limit their ability to provide ecosystem services. We studied the arthropods in a mountainous urban ecosystem in Ghana and found differences in taxonomic richness and activity density between woodlands and built-up areas. Plant diversity and structural complexity were key factors explaining the differences in arthropod communities. The remaining vegetation patches in built-up areas should be protected to support biodiversity.

Urban green infrastructure as a tool for controlling the resilience of urban sprawl

Jose G. Vargas-Hernandez et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes the relationships and controlling functions between urban green infrastructures and the resilience of urban sprawl. While no linear causality is found, a more holistic connectivity can control urban sprawl. The study suggests that a holistic approach is needed to build urban resilience based on green infrastructure.

Functional segregation of resource-use strategies of native and invasive plants across Mediterranean biome communities

Javier Galan Diaz et al.

Summary: Functional segregation among native and invasive plant species in Mediterranean-climate communities is influenced by trait values related to leaf economics, resource-use efficiency, and plant height. Invasive species tend to exhibit traits associated with acquisitive resource-use strategy, showing greater functional diversity compared to native species across various communities. Intraspecific trait variance, especially in resource use efficiency, plays a significant role in determining functional trait diversity within communities.

Summary: The study explores the relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning, specifically looking at aboveground biomass (AGB) and different aspects of functional diversity across various bioclimatic regions in Iran. Results show that functional diversity (FD) and functional beta diversity have different impacts on AGB in ecosystems of varying productivity levels, with grazing playing a significant role in shaping these relationships.

Decomposition of mangrove roots depends on the bulk density they grew in

Anne Ola et al.

Summary: Mangroves hold significant organic carbon stocks in their soils, with decomposition rates of root material being strongly influenced by soil bulk density (BD). The study found that mass loss decreased with increasing soil BD during root growth, and that variations in mass loss were likely influenced by N levels, C:N ratios, and lignin content of the root tissue.

Agricultural intensification and climate change are rapidly decreasing insect biodiversity

Peter H. Raven et al.

Summary: The decline in insect biomass and diversity since the end of World War II has been directly linked to the spread and intensification of agriculture, as well as climate change in some regions. Industrialized farming practices, such as monoculturing and the use of pesticides, have had destructive effects on insect and other biodiversity. To mitigate the effects of the Sixth Mass Extinction event, efforts will need to focus on stabilizing human population, sustainable consumption levels, and empowering less wealthy people and nations.

Plant diversity, conservation significance, and community structure of two protected areas under different governance

Emmanuel Opuni-Frimpong et al.

Summary: Protected areas have become crucial for global biodiversity conservation in the 21st century, with the need to utilize all available resources and models to ensure holistic strategies. In Ghana, shared governance and indigenous community models are both used for protected area management, with each having its own advantages in terms of species diversity and dominant vegetation. Despite the wildlife sanctuary supporting a greater composition and diversity of plant species than the sacred grove, both governance models show synergies that can contribute to sustainable management of protected areas.
