Farmers' Willingness to Adopt Short Rotation Plantations on Marginal Lands: Qualitative Study About Incentives and Barriers in Slovakia

Lea Ranacher et al.

Summary: The study identified limited adoption of short rotation plantations among farmers in Slovakia due to land fragmentation, competition with food production, and lack of identification with SRP. However, farmers showed interest in the economic and environmental benefits of using low quality lands and agricultural cooperatives were more open to SRP. Therefore, providing farmers with science-based facts and addressing conflicting views on the impacts of SRP is crucial to increase acceptance and develop measures to encourage SRP adoption.

Locating Hotspots for the Social Life Cycle Assessment of Bio-Based Products from Short Rotation Coppice

Daniela Fuertner et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the impacts of establishing new value chains on the economy and society, proposing the use of social life cycle assessment (SLCA) to evaluate potential social impacts and developing a three-step method to identify the most vulnerable and relevant social aspects. Short-rotation-coppice as an alternative form of agricultural dendromass production provides additional income and job opportunities for local farmers, with current research focusing on health and safety aspects of workers.

The Impact of Crop Diversification on the Economic Efficiency of Small Farms in Poland

Agnieszka Kurdys-Kujawska et al.

Summary: Crop diversification plays a crucial role in enhancing the resilience of farmers in dealing with risks related to climate change. The study in Poland revealed significant regional differences in crop diversification levels, with key determinants including the exposure of agricultural production to different climatic factors and the value of fixed assets. Additionally, the research highlighted the importance of supporting small farms that diversify crops to ensure greater stability and economic efficiency.

Regional Differences of Agricultural Land Market in Slovakia: A Challenge for Sustainable Agriculture

Jarmila Lazikova et al.

Summary: This study in Slovakia found significant differences in proposed land prices between regions, with landowners being slightly influenced by neighboring regions. However, there is an issue of unreasonable pricing, where land of poor fertility is sold at a higher price than land of better quality, potentially leading to non-agricultural use of land and crowding out agricultural production. It is suggested that legislative measures need to be revised to promote sustainable agricultural production across all regions.

Development Trends in the Crop Production in Slovakia after Accession to the European Union-Case Study, Slovakia

Jana Nemethova et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes the impact of Slovakia's accession to the European Union on crop production, identifying connections, parallels, and differences between the development of sown areas of major crops in Slovakia and its regions from 2004 to 2020. The study reveals regional differentiation and identifies two clusters based on similarities in crop development. The changes in the agrarian sector post-2004, influenced by Slovakia's EU accession, have been reflected in alterations in the area and structure of cultivated crops, as well as in the varied development of sown areas.
