Deciphering the origin and controlling factors of mercury in reclaimed soils: a case study in Pingshuo opencast coalmine of China

Wenxiang Zhou et al.

Summary: The study on mercury contamination in the South Dump of the Pingshuo opencast coalmine shows that most soil samples have moderate levels of total Hg, with low ecological risk index values. Contaminated areas are mainly near coal gangue-filled areas, with different distribution patterns in topsoil and other soil horizons. The slight contamination in topsoil is due to nearby coal-fired power plant emissions, while contamination in other soil horizons is linked to coal gangue weathering and spontaneous combustion.

Variability in Soil Macronutrient Stocks across a Chronosequence of Masson Pine Plantations

Jie He et al.

Summary: Plantations have a significant role in the global nutrient cycle due to their large stocks of soil macronutrients. However, the impacts of plantations on soil macronutrient stocks in relation to stand age and soil physicochemical properties have not been well understood. This study examined soil macronutrient stocks in Masson pine plantations at different stand ages and depths and found that nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium stocks initially increased and then decreased with stand age. Carbon stocks were highest, followed by potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorus stocks. The study also revealed that phosphorus and potassium may be important limiting factors in Masson pine plantation ecosystems. Overall, this research highlights the importance of considering different soil physicochemical properties when studying soil macronutrient stocks in plantations.

Contributions of soil erosion and decomposition to SOC loss during a short-term paddy land abandonment in Northeast Thailand

Man Liu et al.

Summary: In the short-term abandonment of paddy lands in tropical sandy soils, the decline in soil organic carbon content was mainly attributed to both soil erosion (25.2-36.3%) and microbial decomposition (33.2-44.8%). The study highlighted the significant impact of erosion and decomposition on SOC loss during agricultural abandonment.

Comparative analysis of soil nutrients under different land-use types in the Mun River basin of Northeast Thailand

Man Liu et al.

Summary: The study compared soil nutrient differences under different land-use types in the Mun River basin of Northeast Thailand. Results showed that silty soils under artificial forest had higher contents of organic carbon, organic nitrogen, and inorganic minerals compared to sandy soils under native forest. Abandoned paddy lands had significantly lower soil nutrient contents than paddy fields due to severe loss of fine particles.

Spatial distribution characteristics of reconstructed soil bulk density of opencast coal-mine in the loess area of China

Yuhan Huang et al.

Summary: This study quantifies the spatial distribution pattern and variation of RSBD on reclaimed land in the loess area of China using geostatistical spatial interpolation and multiple regression analysis. Factors such as topography, vegetation cover, soil particle size distribution, and soil erosion were found to affect the spatial variability of the RSBD. The boundary between the sunny slope and shady slope was considered to be key in dividing the RSBD, which was generally distributed in stripes and patches.

Dynamics and losses of soil organic matter and nutrients by water erosion in cover crop management systems in olive groves, in tropical regions

Danielle Vieira Guimaraes et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the dynamics and losses of soil organic matter and nutrients by water erosion in olive groves, under different management systems, in Brazil. The results showed that intercropping olive trees with cover plants improved soil protection, especially in terms of carbon stocks, and should be adopted. Maintaining olive trees without intercropping led to high levels of nutrient and carbon losses, proving to be unsustainable.
