Carbon sink potential and allocation in above- and below-ground biomass in willow coppice

Marcin Pietrzykowski et al.

Summary: The research shows that a 12-year-old willow coppice plantation near the Vistula River in southern Poland has high carbon sink potential and sequestration rates, indicating its ability to mitigate the effects of high CO2 concentrations over a short time span.

Life cycle greenhouse gas emissions of ethanol produced via fermentation of sugars derived from shrub willow (Salix ssp.) hot water extraction in the Northeast United States

Obste Therasme et al.

Summary: The study shows that ethanol produced from fermentation of sugars from hot water extract of willow grown on cropland can sequester 0.0120.003 kg CO2eq MJ(-1) in a supply system with summer harvest and storage. Despite decreases in soil organic carbon when willow is grown on grassland, the produced fuel still provides significant climate benefits compared to gasoline.
