Gynoecium structure and development in core Caryophyllales: a matter of proportions

Louis P. Ronse de Craene

Summary: This review explores the diversity in shapes and evolutionary trends in the gynoecium of core Caryophyllales, identifying two major developmental shifts linked to carpellary tissue and floral apex development. Different ovary shapes at mid-developmental stages predict further development, affecting septa and ovule numbers. The study also reveals common trends in weakening septa, leading to predictable developmental trends in ovaries within core Caryophyllales.

A living bridge between two enemies: haustorium structure and evolution across parasitic flowering plants

Luiza Teixeira-Costa

Summary: Parasitic plants are characterized by the development of a highly plastic organ known as haustorium, which adapts to physiological and anatomical differences between the parasite and its host through vascular connections. The proposed haustorium body plan consists of an upper part for attachment and a lower part for parasitic tissues within the host, showing multi-level convergence in comparison with other plant organs.

A New Interpretation of the Successive Cambia of Some Nyctaginaceae as Interxylary Phloem

Israel L. Cunha Neto et al.

Summary: The study reveals that most species of Nyctaginaceae have stems with polycyclic eusteles, developing a single cambium that produces secondary xylem and phloem at unequal rates. This unique activity results in a lack of a regular cylinder of secondary vascular tissues and the formation of secondary phloem strands embedded within the secondary xylem.

Carbon isotope composition of plant photosynthetic tissues reflects a Crassulacean Acid Metabolism (CAM) continuum in the majority of CAM lineages

Thibaud F. E. Messerschmid et al.

Summary: The stable carbon isotope composition, expressed as delta C-13, in plant tissues provides valuable information about photosynthetic pathways. CAM plants utilize a more efficient form of photosynthesis compared to C-3 plants, resulting in less negative delta C-13 values. While past studies have shown bimodal distribution in CAM plant lineages, some exceptions exist. The continuum between CAM and C-3 photosynthesis cautioned against the usage of a delta C-13 threshold in macroevolutionary studies, urging for lineage-specific reconstructions rather than a unifying model of CAM evolution.

Differentiation in stem and leaf traits among sympatric lianas, scandent shrubs and trees in a subalpine cold temperate forest

Ke-Yan Zhang et al.

Summary: This study measured 16 functional traits of lianas, scandent shrubs, and trees, revealing clear differentiation in stem and leaf traits among the three growth forms. Lianas had higher specific leaf area and lower carbon concentration compared to co-occurring trees, with scandent shrubs showing intermediate values. The differentiation among the three forms was mainly explained by variation in stem traits.
