Nitrogen cycling microbiomes are structured by plant mycorrhizal associations with consequences for nitrogen oxide fluxes in forests

Ryan M. Mushinski et al.

Summary: The study found that soil microbial communities involved in nitrogen cycling are significantly influenced by the composition of overstory trees in temperate forests. Trees associating with different types of fungi have different impacts on the N-cycle potential and activity of soil microbial communities. In addition, there is a linear decrease in volatile reactive nitrogen gas flux with increasing abundance of ectomycorrhizal trees.

Drought and rewetting events enhance nitrate leaching and seepage-mediated translocation of microbes from beech forest soils

Markus Krueger et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the increasing frequency of drought periods in temperate regions in the future may lead to more frequent disturbances in nutrient fluxes in forest soils, resulting in increased output of soil-derived microorganisms. This in turn could have implications for microbial community dynamics and metabolic potential in subsoils and subsurface environments.
