Ecology of domestic dogs (Canis familiaris) as a host for Guinea worm (Dracunculus medinensis) infection in Ethiopia

Summary: The global programme to eradicate Guinea worm disease has successfully reduced human cases, but infections in non-human animals, particularly domestic dogs, pose a major challenge to further progress. Research in Ethiopia found no ecological or behavioral correlates of infection history in dogs, and no evidence to support hypotheses for a novel transmission pathway. Increased clean water provision by dog owners appeared to be a response to previous infections. Variations in dog behavior, owner behavior, and natural water bodies influenced exposure to potential sources of infection.
