A comparison of core-shell Si/C and embedded structure Si/C composites as negative materials for lithium-ion batteries

Shuai-Jin Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigated and compared silicon-based negative materials with different microstructures, focusing on their electrochemical performance and electrode morphology evolution during cycling. The embedded structure Si/C material showed superior cycling performance and electrode structure maintenance compared to core-shell Si/C material, with a higher capacity retention ratio after 100 cycles. These findings can provide guidance for the design and application of nano/micro-structured silicon-based negative materials.

Extra storage capacity in transition metal oxide lithium-ion batteries revealed by in situ magnetometry

Qiang Li et al.

Summary: Although some transition metal oxide-based electrodes exhibit high storage capacities beyond theoretical values, the surface capacitance on metal nanoparticles involving spin-polarized electrons is consistent with a space charge mechanism. The phenomenon of anomalously high storage capacities in different metal oxides is still under debate, but in situ magnetometry has shown that surface capacitance plays a dominant role in providing extra capacity. This space charge mechanism can be generalized to a broad range of transition metal compounds, providing guidance for advanced energy storage systems.

Alloy anodes for sodium-ion batteries

Shu-Min Zheng et al.

Summary: This review discusses the progress and importance of alloy-based anode materials in sodium-ion batteries, highlighting their significant role in the development of high-energy storage systems. The challenges and potential of alloy-type anodes for practical application are addressed, along with strategies to improve their electrochemical performance. The study also proposes further research directions involving multi-component alloys/high-entropy alloys for alloy-based anodes.

Operando Magnetometry Probing the Charge Storage Mechanism of CoO Lithium-Ion Batteries

Hongsen Li et al.

Summary: Research has found that cobalt oxide has larger storage capacity in lithium-ion batteries. The anomalous capacity is associated with the formation of a spin capacitor and the growth of a polymeric film. Operando magnetometry technology provides direct evidence of the catalytic role of metallic cobalt in assisting the polymeric film formation.

Reacquainting the Electrochemical Conversion Mechanism of FeS2 Sodium-Ion Batteries by Operando Magnetometry

Zhaohui Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of ion-embedding mechanisms on the electrochemical properties of FeS2/Na (Li) cells through a combination of operando magnetometry and electrochemical measurements. It is found that the smaller iron grains produced by the conversion reaction in SIBs lead to more serious pulverization and worse cycle performance. The sluggish kinetics in SIBs caused by the larger Na-ion radius is identified as the underlying reason for the observed phenomena.
