Pediatric Pain Assessment in the Emergency Department Patient and Caregiver Agreement Using the Wong-Baker FACES and the Faces Pain Scale-Revised

Simone L. Lawson et al.

Summary: The study aimed to assess the agreement between pediatric emergency department patients and their caregivers when using the Wong-Baker FACES and Faces Pain Scale-Revised for acute pain assessment. Results showed poor agreement between caregivers and children, indicating that caregiver report should not be used as a substitute for self-report of pain if possible.

Variation in hospital admission in febrile children evaluated at the Emergency Department (ED) in Europe: PERFORM, a multicentre prospective observational study

Dorine M. Borensztajn et al.

Summary: The comparison of Emergency Department admission rates for febrile children in European hospitals is influenced by various factors, but overall admission rates seem to reflect disease severity accurately after adjusting for patient characteristics. However, there still exists significant variation in admission rates for certain patient groups even after adjusting for patient characteristics.

Does diagnostic uncertainty increase antibiotic prescribing in primary care?

Dan Wang et al.

Summary: This study found that physicians' perception of diagnostic uncertainty can affect their antibiotic prescribing behavior, while patients' tolerance of uncertainty can also influence physicians' antibiotic prescribing behavior. Therefore, reducing uncertainty and improving the management of uncertainty by physicians and patients could lead to a reduction in antibiotic use.

Antibiotics for lower respiratory tract infection in children presenting in primary care in England (ARTIC PC): a double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled trial

Paul Little et al.

Summary: The study found that amoxicillin is unlikely to be clinically effective in reducing symptom duration in children with uncomplicated lower respiratory tract infections, overall or in key clinical subgroups where antibiotics are commonly prescribed. Unless pneumonia is suspected, clinicians should not prescribe antibiotics for most children presenting with chest infections.
