Temporal Trends of Persistent Organic Pollutants across Africa after a Decade of MONET Passive Air Sampling

Kevin B. White et al.

Summary: This study reports the concentrations of 20 POPs monitored in 9 African countries, showing significant declines in the concentrations of many POPs over the past decade while others remain stable or even increasing. The elevated concentrations at some sites are primarily due to sustained local emissions, while the low concentrations at Mt. Kenya represent the continental background level primarily influenced by long-range transport.

Significant release of unintentionally produced non-Aroclor polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners PCB 47, PCB 51 and PCB 68 from a silicone rubber production site in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany

Katja Hombrecher et al.

Summary: The use of 2,4-DCBP in silicone rubber production leads to emissions of PCB pollutants into the air, impacting the surrounding environment and ecosystems. Substituting the cross-linking agent and implementing mitigation measures significantly reduces the environmental impact.

Global intercomparison of polyurethane foam passive air samplers evaluating sources of variability in SVOC measurements

Lisa Melymuk et al.

Summary: The study examines the comparability of data collected from different PUF-PAS designs and the impact of analysis in different laboratories on the results. Results indicate that variability introduced by analysis in different laboratories far exceeds differences due to sampler design, highlighting the need for intercalibration exercises to ensure analytical comparability between laboratories.

Atmospheric concentrations and temporal trends of polychlorinated biphenyls and organochlorine pesticides in the Arctic during 2011-2018

Yanfen Hao et al.

Summary: Passive air samples were collected in Ny-Alesund and London Island in the Arctic annually for seven years to investigate concentrations of persistent organic pollutants (POPs). The study found declining trends in most POPs, with 3,3'-dichlorobiphenyl (PCB-11) being prevalent. Long-range atmospheric transport was identified as the main factor influencing the distribution of POPs in the Arctic atmosphere, with minor impact from human activities at research stations.

Unintentionally produced polychlorinated biphenyls in pigments: An updated review on their formation, emission sources, contamination status, and toxic effects

Hoang Quoc Anh et al.

Summary: This review article provides a comprehensive overview of the formation, emission, environmental occurrence, and potential adverse effects of unintentionally produced polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in pigments. PCBs are typically formed during the manufacturing of organic pigments and can contaminate atmospheric, terrestrial, and aquatic ecosystems, affecting organisms living in these environments. The variability in PCB concentrations and profiles among pigment types and producers highlights the importance of appropriate monitoring, management, and abatement strategies for these pollutants.

Disposition of PCB 11 in Mice Following Acute Oral Exposure

Chun-Yun Zhang et al.

Summary: Study on the distribution of PCB 11 and its metabolites in mice after oral exposure revealed that PCB 11 mainly accumulates in adipose tissue and lungs, with detected hydroxylated and sulfate metabolites in the liver. These findings lay the foundation for future toxicity studies on PCB 11.

Tracking POPs in Global Air from the First 10 Years of the GAPS Network (2005 to 2014)

Jasmin K. Schuster et al.

Summary: The Global Atmospheric Passive Sampling (GAPS) network, established in 2005 across 55 global sites, provides information on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) concentrations in air on a global scale. Measurements spanning 5-10 years at 40 sites show varying trends for different OCPs and PCBs. Global trends reflect sources and recycling of HCH, emissions from old PCB stockpiles, and restrictions on endosulfan use.
