Inorganic-Organic Interpenetrating Network Hydrogels as Tissue-Integrating Luminescent Implants: Physicochemical Characterization and Preclinical Evaluation

Rachel M. Unruh et al.

Summary: The fabrication of inorganic-organic interpenetrating network (IPN) hydrogels offers an optimized oxygen transport system for injectable biosensors, with independently adjustable physicochemical properties while maintaining a 250% increase in oxygen permeability compared to controls. The functionalized gels, equipped with Pd(II) benzoporphyrin phosphor, successfully tracked tissue oxygen levels for 76 days in a subcutaneous porcine model, promoting tissue ingrowth and minimizing fibrosis around the implant. These findings demonstrate the potential of IPN networks for tailored design of implantable biomaterials in personalized medicine and other biomedical applications.

Highly Transparent, Stretchable, and Self-Healable Ionogel for Multifunctional Sensors, Triboelectric Nanogenerator, and Wearable Fibrous Electronics

Lijie Sun et al.

Summary: Ionogels with high transparency, stretchability, and self-healing capability have shown great potential for wearable electronics. By utilizing double physical cross-linking involving hydrogen bonding and dipole-dipole interaction, these ionogels exhibit excellent self-healing properties. They have been utilized to fabricate multifunctional sensors for strain and temperature, as well as antifreezing ionogel fibers with good sensing performance. Furthermore, an antifreezing ionogel-based triboelectric nanogenerator (ITENG) has been developed for efficient energy harvesting, showing promising results in terms of current, voltage, and power density. This research offers a new strategy for designing ionogels to advance wearable electronics.

Characterizing reduced scattering coefficient of normal human skin across different anatomic locations and Fitzpatrick skin types using spatial frequency domain imaging

Thinh Phan et al.

Summary: This study used SFDI to map the scattering properties of human skin across different skin types and anatomical locations, revealing significant variation in mu(s') values between skin types at wavelengths with prominent melanin absorption. Additionally, mu(s') varied considerably across different anatomical locations at 851 nm, where the confounding effects from melanin absorption are minimized.

Photobiomodulation effects on photodynamic therapy in HNSCC cell lines

Clara M. G. de Faria et al.

Summary: The combination of photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) and porphyrin-based photodynamic therapy (PDT) shows potential in enhancing cell toxicity, especially in squamous cell carcinoma cell lines. However, the timing of application between PBMT, photosensitizer incubation, and PDT may impact the treatment outcome. Additional research is needed to further explore the benefits of the PBMT-PDT combination.
