Effects of scandium chloride on osteogenic and adipogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells

Na Ren et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that ScCl3 can enhance proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of rat bone MSCs while reducing adipogenic differentiation to a certain extent through the Wnt/beta-catenin signaling pathway. Appropriate concentrations of ScCl3 show potential in improving bone remodeling and may lead to new strategies for designing composites for biomedical applications in the future.

Biomembrane-based nanostructures for cancer targeting and therapy: From synthetic liposomes to natural biomembranes and membrane-vesicles

Jing Wang et al.

Summary: The translational success of liposomes in chemotherapeutics has shown the potential of biomembrane-based nanostructures in drug delivery, while efforts are also being made in utilizing naturally derived lipid membranes for anti-cancer therapies. Despite differences in production and composition, the common phospholipid bilayer structure allows for modification and functionalization of liposomes, cell membrane-derived nanomaterials, and extracellular vesicles to combat challenges in tumor-targeted drug delivery. The review summarizes recent advancements in engineering membrane-derived nanostructures with intelligent modules for targeting tumor cells and the microenvironment in fighting malignancy, and discusses the potential of enhancing cancer therapy by combining engineered functionalities with naturally occurring activity.

Nanoscale Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-8 Activator of Canonical MAPK Signaling for Bone Repair

Xiaomeng Gao et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that nano ZIF-8 can drive rat bone mesenchymal stem cells differentiation into osteoblasts, with better osteogenic effect compared to ionic conditions of Zn at the same concentration. The cellular uptake mechanisms were revealed to involve caveolae-mediated endocytosis and macropinocytosis. Additionally, transcriptome sequencing identified upregulation of multiple osteogenic pathways, primarily phosphorylating ERK to activate the canonical mitogen-activated protein kinase pathway for promoting osteogenesis.

Osteogenically-induced exosomes stimulate osteogenesis of human adipose-derived stem cells

Mengru Zhu et al.

Summary: Exosomes derived from human adipose-derived stem cells during osteogenic induction for 1-14 days efficiently promote osteogenic differentiation, proliferation, and migration of stem cells. Specific conditions of exosome treatment significantly enhance the expression of osteoblast-related proteins and are effectively internalized by cells.

Recent advances in the synthesis techniques for zeolitic imidazolate frameworks and their sensing applications

Preeti Kukkar et al.

Summary: Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) belong to metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) or metalazolate frameworks (MAFs) with unique topologies, allowing for robust coordination and advantageous properties such as easy crystallization, high loading capacities, and good biocompatibility. Technical advancements in porous coordination polymers synthesis have diversified fabrication approaches for ZIFs, leading to the characterization of their structural and functional attributes.

Bone targeting nanocarrier-assisted delivery of adenosine to combat osteoporotic bone loss

Jiaul Hoque et al.

Summary: Extracellular adenosine plays a key role in maintaining bone health and could be used to treat bone loss, but challenges remain in systemic administration due to short half-life and ubiquitous receptors. Bone-targeting nanocarriers demonstrated higher accumulation in vertebrae and attenuated bone loss in mice, suggesting potential for treating bone degenerative diseases like osteoporosis.
