Soil organic carbon and total nitrogen stocks as affected by vegetation types and altitude across the mountainous regions in the Yunnan Province, south-western China

Yongqiang Zhang et al.

Summary: The research indicates that there are significant spatial distribution differences in SOC and TN stocks under different vegetation types and altitudes in the mountainous regions of Yunnan, which are closely related to soil depth, pH value, mean annual temperature, and mean annual precipitation. Higher altitudes (3600-4500 m) in dark coniferous forest, alpine shrub meadow, coniferous forest, and alpine meadow have higher SOC and TN stocks.

Investigating spatially varying relationships between total organic carbon contents and pH values in European agricultural soil using geographically weighted regression

Haofan Xu et al.

Summary: The study reveals special spatially varying relationships between total organic carbon (TOC) and pH values in European agricultural soil, with both negative and positive correlations observed locally. Significantly positive correlations are found in central-eastern Europe, while negative correlations are mainly observed in northern Europe, and mixed relationships occur in southern Europe. The study highlights the importance of specific natural factors, such as quartz-rich soil, and potentially anthropogenic inputs in influencing the TOC and pH spatial distribution. Geographically weighted regression (GWR) proves to be a powerful technique for exploring these spatially varying relationships at the local level.

Spatiotemporal variations in soil organic carbon and their drivers in southeastern China during 1981-2011

Enze Xie et al.

Summary: This study examined the spatiotemporal distribution of soil organic carbon (SOC) in three typical regions in southeastern China from 1981 to 2011. The results showed that topography, soil sand content, and carbon inputs were the main drivers of SOC variability in different regions. Significant increases in SOC storage were observed in some areas, while others experienced rapid decreases due to land use changes and carbon inputs.

A global review of rubber plantations: Impacts on ecosystem functions, mitigations, future directions, and policies for sustainable cultivation

Ashutosh Kumar Singh et al.

Summary: The expansion of rubber plantations driven by the growing global demand for latex has negatively impacted ecosystem functions, with significant decreases in aboveground biomass, belowground biomass, and plant diversity. Agroforestry, integrated pest management, cover cropping, mulching, and composting can help improve ecosystem functions in rubber plantations to some extent, but further research on plantation management is needed to mitigate these negative impacts.

Higher soil acidification risk in southeastern Tibetan Plateau

Qiongyu Zhang et al.

Summary: The study compared the soil acidification risk in the Tibetan Plateau (TP) with the Mongolia Plateau (MP) from 1980 to 2019, finding that the TP had lower cumulative acid input. The TP was less acid-sensitive overall compared to the MP, but the southeastern region was identified as highly susceptible to acidification due to low soil exchangeable base cation levels and higher acid input concentrations. Control of atmospheric acid deposition, especially sulfur deposition, is recommended for ecosystem sustainability in the southeastern TP.

Spatial distribution patterns of soil total phosphorus influenced by climatic factors in China's forest ecosystems

Jie Zhu et al.

Summary: The study revealed that soil total phosphorus concentration significantly decreases with increasing soil depth, while spatial distribution increases with increasing latitude and elevation gradient, but decreases with increasing longitude gradient. Climate factors, especially temperature and precipitation, have a significant impact on the distribution of soil total phosphorus, with temperature having a higher explanatory rate compared to precipitation.

Geographical spatial distribution and productivity dynamic change of eucalyptus plantations in China

YuXing Zhang et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the spatial distribution of eucalyptus plantations in China over time and found specific temperature, precipitation, and elevation requirements for optimal eucalyptus growth. Productivity and carbon fixation of eucalyptus plantations varied with different regions and planting durations, highlighting the importance of scientific management to improve planting efficiency.

Revealing horizontal and vertical variation of soil organic carbon, soil total nitrogen and C:N ratio in subtropical forests of southeastern China

Jiaqi Dong et al.

Summary: Soil organic carbon (SOC) and total nitrogen (STN) contents decrease significantly with increasing soil depth, and are closely related to topography. The dominant tree species, elevation, and vegetation index are identified as key factors affecting SOC and STN contents in subtropical forests.
