A review on the applications of micro-/nano-encapsulated phase change material slurry in heat transfer and thermal storage systems

Mohammad Saeid Ghoghaei et al.

Summary: In modern heat transfer systems, thermal storage not only helps to balance demand and supply, but also improves heat transfer efficiency. This study reviewed the applications of micro- or nano-encapsulated phase change slurries (MPCMs/NPCMs) and their effects on thermal storage and heat transfer enhancement. The addition of MPCMs/NPCMs to the base fluid has advantages such as intensifying energy absorption capacity and increasing heat transfer coefficient and Nusselt number.

Summary: This paper focuses on numerical simulation using a mesh-free method for a double-diffusive flow in a porous infinite-shaped enclosure suspended by NEPCM. The effects of various parameters on the phase change zone, materials tracking, temperature, velocity field, and concentration were discussed, showing the importance of fusion temperature and Stefan number in controlling the phase change zone.

The magnetic field on a nanofluid flow within a finned cavity containing solid particles

Abdelraheem M. Aly et al.

Summary: The ISPH method is used to analyze the effects of a magnetic field on thermosolutal convection of solid particles spreading within a finned cavity. The simulations show that solid particles tend to move towards the upper part of the cavity and the fins on the upper wall play a role in adjusting the spread of the particles. The blending between solid and fluid particles is influenced by an increase in the Hartman parameter, while the Soret and Dufour numbers reduce the blending of solid particles within a nanofluid flow.

Summary: The study found that the presence of internal fins enhances heat transfer performance while maintaining a similar total amount of stored energy compared to the case without fins. Furthermore, changing the fins structures can offer a higher rate of heat transfer and a better energy storage capacity, rather than increasing the number of fins.

Summary: In this study, numerical simulations were used to investigate the performance assessment of a PCM filled three-dimensional vertical cylinder under the combined effects of surface corrugation and presence of binary nanoparticles in the heat transfer fluid. Results showed that thermal transport features are enhanced and charging time is reduced for higher values of Reynolds number and solid volume fraction of the binary mixture in the heat transfer fluid.

Heat transfer enhancement of nano-encapsulated phase change material (NEPCM) using metal foam for thermal energy storage

W. Q. Li et al.

Summary: The Foam/NEPCM composite material enhances thermal energy storage by combining the thermal enhancement of metal foam and latent heat absorption of NEPCM, resulting in lower wall temperature and more uniform internal temperature compared to pure NEPCM. The study also found that the lower porosity Foam/NEPCM composite has lower heated wall temperature and internal temperature near the heated wall due to its higher thermal conductivity and area/volume ratio.

Summary: The energy storage capability of Nano-Encapsulated Phase Change Material (NEPCM) nanoparticles in an enclosure during the charging and discharging process was investigated. The study found that an increase in the volume fraction of nanoparticles led to a rise in the rate of heat transfer and total energy storage. Additionally, decreasing the Stefan number increased the total stored energy, and the fusion temperature played a significant role in the energy storage behavior.
