Black Carbon Emission Reduction Due to COVID-19 Lockdown in China

Mengwei Jia et al.

Summary: The study found that during the Lunar New Year Holiday of 2020, China's lockdown led to a 70% reduction in black carbon emissions. In northern China, black carbon concentrations unexpectedly increased by 29% in the first week of lockdown, despite a decrease in emissions; whereas in eastern China, black carbon emissions sharply decreased in the first week and recovered in sync with the end of the lockdown.

Estimates of mass absorption cross sections of black carbon for filter-based absorption photometers in the Arctic

Sho Ohata et al.

Summary: Long-term measurements of atmospheric black carbon (BC) mass concentrations are essential for studying its emission, transport, and deposition. Instruments measuring aerosol absorption coefficient (b(abs)) in the Arctic have shown high correlations with independent BC mass concentrations, leading to the derivation of mass absorption cross section values for accurate estimation of BC mass concentrations.
