Control and regulation of acetate overflow in Escherichia coli

Pierre Millard et al.

Summary: Researchers developed a kinetic model of E. coli metabolism that quantitatively explained acetate overflow and predicted the response to new perturbations. They found that acetate regulates glucose metabolism by coordinating the expression of glycolytic and TCA genes.

How Bacterial Redox Sensors Transmit Redox Signals via Structural Changes

In-Gyun Lee et al.

Summary: Bacteria, like humans, face various stresses during their lifetime, such as oxidative stress, caused by cellular metabolism and environmental factors, which can damage cellular macromolecules and hinder normal cell growth. In response to such stress, bacteria have developed protective strategies including changing gene expression patterns to convert harmful oxidants into harmless products. Furthermore, structural biology and biochemical studies have revealed how bacterial redox sensor proteins recognize cellular redox states and regulate downstream signaling pathways.

Oxidative Stress in Bacteria and the Central Dogma of Molecular Biology

Michel Fasnacht et al.

Summary: Since the great oxidation event, Earth's cellular life forms have had to deal with reactive oxygen species (ROS) affecting biomolecules and cellular metabolism. Increased ROS levels in the biosphere represent growing stress and shape species evolution. Systems have evolved to remove ROS and repair damage, but oxidative stress occurs if ROS surpass the cell's capacity.
