Analysis of the energy and damage evolution rule for sandstone based on the particle flow method

Shuguang Zhang et al.

Summary: Using particle flow code PFC3D, the triaxial compression of sandstone under various radial stresses and loading strain rates was simulated to investigate the failure process. The results show that tension and shear-induced cracks increase with radial stress, while both normal and tangential contact forces exhibit strong anisotropy. Energy and damage evolution analysis reveal specific patterns of evolution during deformation and failure of rocks.

Mathematical methods to unloading creep constitutive model of rock mass under high stress and hydraulic pressure

Ningyu Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the unloading mechanical characteristics of rock mass under high stress and high water pressure through experiments and mathematical modeling. The results show that rock mass deformation parameters generally exhibit exponential functional variations in different stages, leading to the proposal of a nonlinear creep constitutive model with good fitting results. The study provides theoretical references for accurate prediction of time-dependent deformation of deep rocks under high stresses and high hydraulic pressures.

Calibration of coupled hydro-mechanical properties of grain-based model for simulating fracture process and associated pore pressure evolution in excavation damage zone around deep tunnels

Kiarash Farahmand et al.

Summary: This paper aims to develop a methodology for calibrating a discrete element model to replicate the hydro-mechanical properties of brittle rock and simulate excavation damage zones. A new cohesive crack model is implemented to control material fracturing behavior, and the role of induced microcrack connectivity on permeability increase is investigated. The influence of pore fluid pressure on weakening rock strength is studied, and the validity of Terzaghi's effective stress law is tested. Evolution of damage and pore pressure around tunnels in granitic rock is also examined.

Study on Time-Dependent Fracturing Behaviour for Three Different Hard Rock Under High True Triaxial Stress

Jun Zhao et al.

Summary: Crack propagation in hard rocks is influenced by applied stress and mineral composition, with high axial stress causing cracks to develop over time. The determination of damage stress through short-term tests can be efficiently utilized for long-term strength analysis, despite slight differences between the values obtained from short-term and long-term tests.

A wing-crack extension model for tensile response of saturated rocks under coupled static-dynamic loading

Yi Liu et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the combined effect of water saturation and static pre-tension on the dynamic tensile strength of saturated rocks, and proposes an analytic solution for stress field of elliptical crack under coupled pore water pressure and far-field stress, along with a wing-crack extension model to analyze the dynamic fracturing behavior. Experimental results from coupled static-dynamic tension tests show a rational consistency with the theoretical results in terms of the dynamic tensile strength of saturated rocks.

Jiangbo Xu et al.

Summary: The study investigates the fracture mechanism of jointed Phyllite through uniaxial compression tests on different joint inclination Phyllites. It discusses the influence of joint inclination on Phyllite failure mode and studies the progressive failure process. The results show significant anisotropy in uniaxial compressive strength of jointed Phyllite, with a U-shaped change as inclination increases.

The meso-fracturing mechanism of marble under unloading confining pressure paths and constant axial stress

Linna Sun et al.

Summary: This study conducted failure tests on marble during unloading confining pressure under constant axial stress and simulations with the particle flow code. It was found that as the confining pressure increases, more cracks occur in the samples upon failure, with an increase in the proportion of shear cracks and a decrease in tension cracks. The failure mode of the samples transitions from shear-dominated to conjugated shear failure.

Chao Peng et al.

Summary: This paper proposed a parameter checking method for large-scale models for the first time, which was validated through large tunnel model tests. The research results showed that using parameters checked by small models can increase the mechanical strength of large models, especially with greater impact on the failure mode.
