Orchestrating aquaporin-4 and connexin-43 expression in brain: Differential roles of α1-and β1-syntrophin

Shreyas B. Rao et al.

Summary: The study reveals the interdependence between astrocytic AQP4 and gap junctions, with limited impact on AQP4 isoform expression from deletion of beta 1-syntrophin, but with increased astrocytic gap junctions from double knockout of alpha 1- and beta 1-syntrophin. It highlights the importance of syntrophins in organizing specialized functional domains of brain astrocytes.

Regulation of aquaporin-4 expression in the central nervous system investigated using M23-AQP4 null mouse

Francesco Pisani et al.

Summary: In astrocytes, unknown mechanisms regulate the expression of M1 and M23 isoforms of water channel aquaporin-4. This study found that deletion of M23-AQP4 in mouse spinal cord alters the interaction between AQP4 mRNA and some RBPs involved in AQP4 translation. The RNA helicase DDX17 was identified as a regulator of AQP4 expression in astrocytes.
