Atomic force microscopy to elucidate how peptides disrupt membranes

Katharine Hammond et al.

Summary: Atomic force microscopy is increasingly used to study how peptides disrupt membranes, providing nanometer resolution for dynamic investigations on lipid bilayers. Over the past decade, AFM studies have visualized membrane disruption mechanisms by antimicrobial peptides targeting malignant cells and biofilms. The emergence of high-speed modalities in AFM enables investigations on antimicrobial kinetics and real-time imaging of peptide action on live cells.

TopoStats - A program for automated tracing of biomolecules from AFM images

Joseph G. Beton et al.

Summary: TopoStats is a Python toolkit that automates identification and tracing of individual molecules in Atomic Force Microscopy images without user input. It can accurately identify and trace a wide range of molecules within a field of view, including DNA minicircles, DNA origami rings, and pore forming proteins, with contour lengths typically within 10 nm of the predicted length. The program is freely available on GitHub and can be modified for different uses.

Enabling autonomous scanning probe microscopy imaging of single molecules with deep learning

Javier Sotres et al.

Summary: Scanning probe microscopies offer a powerful tool for investigating surfaces at the nanoscale, but their full potential is hindered by the need for experienced users, data analysis challenges, and time-consuming experiments. Researchers have developed an algorithm utilizing deep learning techniques to control the operation of an Atomic Force Microscope (AFM), bringing SPM closer to full autonomous operation.
