Monitoring of heart rate characteristics to detect neonatal sepsis

Laura Rio et al.

Summary: An increase of HRC index > 2 is significantly associated with the diagnosis of LOS, with a sensitivity of 53% and a specificity of 79%. Sensitivity increases from 25% in infants born > 32 weeks to 76% in infants born < 28 weeks, while specificity decreases from 97% in infants > 32 weeks to 63% in those born < 28 weeks. Monitoring of heart rate characteristics provides valuable information for the early diagnosis of LOS, but the interpretation of HRC indexes is influenced by gestational age.

Deceleration area and capacity during labour-like umbilical cord occlusions identify evolving hypotension: a controlled study in fetal sheep

A. Georgieva et al.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between fetal hypotension and deceleration area and capacity, showing a strong correlation and potential to improve identification of fetuses at risk of hypotension leading to hypoxic-ischaemic injury during labor.

Preventing Brain Injury in the Preterm Infant-Current Controversies and Potential Therapies

Nathanael Yates et al.

Summary: Preterm birth is associated with a high risk of morbidity and mortality, especially brain damage and cerebral palsy. Current treatment options are limited, with magnesium sulfate showing some reduction in risk but no significant long-term improvement. Promising neuroprotective treatments from preclinical studies include therapeutic hypothermia, melatonin, and vitamin D supplementation.

Transient effects of forebrain ischemia on fetal heart rate variability in fetal sheep

Yoshiki Maeda et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the impact of forebrain ischemia on fetal heart rate variability (FHRV), showing that while forebrain ischemia can temporarily affect multiple measures of FHRV, its influence is limited and primarily originates from the hindbrain.

Systematic Review of Intrapartum Fetal Heart Rate Spectral Analysis and an Application in the Detection of Fetal Acidemia

Luisa Castro et al.

Summary: Early diagnosis of fetal acidemia is crucial for preventing brain damage or perinatal death. Spectral analysis of fetal heart rate has been shown to be an effective tool in accurately identifying fetuses at risk of hypoxia, aiding healthcare professionals in implementing timely interventions to reduce adverse perinatal outcomes.
